He was a member of the Pricedale Union Church. For over 50 years; one of his passions was teaching Sunday school to the youth. Walt was active in Gideons International; was a member of F&AM Lodge 638 and American Legion Post 28; both of Monessen and the National Rifle Association. He was the owner and operator of Mood and Mood Lumber Company and served during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent most of his recreational time hunting; fishing or trapping. Survivors include his wife; Virginia C. Anna Louise Gnip Black; 77; of Fallowfield Township; passed away peacefully at her home after a short battle with cancer on Thursday; Aug. 31; 2006. Anna graduated from Charleroi High School and after marrying her husband Robert on March 20; 1950; was a homemaker in Charleroi; Belle Vernon and Tampa; Fla.; returning to Charleroi in 1962. Anna was an avid sports fan; always watching a baseball; basketball; football game or a horse race; particularly the Triple Crown races. She relished spending time with her grandchildren; whom she loved dearly; her children; other family and friends. Anne Roman; of Monessen; died peacefully on Sunday; Aug. 27; 2006; in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc. She was born in Monessen; the daughter of the late John and Susan Golomb Figler. Mrs. Roman was a lifelong resident of Monessen and a graduate of Monessen High School. She was a member of St. John the Divine Orthodox Church in Monessen and its Ladies Altar Guild. Mrs. Roman had most recently worked for the Area Agency on Aging as a receptionist and previously as a bookkeeper and partner for 30 years with her husband at the former Monessen Sports Shop. She started her career as a clerk in the payroll department of the former Pages Steel. But her most important job; and the one that gave her the most pleasure; was being a loving mother and grandmother to her three daughters and six grandchildren. She is survived by her husband; Peter Bud Roman; with whom she had a wonderful and loving relationship for 63 years; three daughters and sons-in-law; LaVonne and James McFarland; of Houston; Texas; Sandra and Ronald Caporossi; of Willoughby Hills; Ohio; and Deborah and David Martin; of Centreville; Va.; six grandchildren who were the light of her life; Mary and Amy McFarland; Katie Caporossi; and Lindsay; Danielle and Brett Martin; two sisters-in-law; Gilda Figler; of Monessen; and Margaret Roman; of Dover; Del.; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon; the United Methodist Women and the Ruth Circle. Jennie was a past matron from 1970 to 1971 of the former Eastern Star; Chapter 196. She graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 1927 and taught for 43 years in the Belle Vernon School District; retiring in 1970. Other memberships included the PA State Education Association; the Westmoreland County Retired Teachers Association and the PA Retired Public School Employees Association.
