Francis W. Nookie Lewis; 87; of Fayette City; passed away Thursday; July 11; 2013 in his home; surrounded by his loving family. A son of the late Francis H. Lewis and Betty I. Fillingham; he was born in Clairton on September 13; 1925. He attended Charleroi High School where he was an All Valley in football in 1943 and 1944 and All Valley in basketball in 1944. He received the Leslie Morgan Trophy in 1944 and was inducted into the Charleroi Hall of Fame in 1987. He joined the Army Air Corp in 1943 and was called to active duty in 1944. After attending various electronic training schools; he was assigned as a radar technician / operator on the SS India Victory; a troop transport moving POWs and troops between the USA; France and Belgium. Mr. Lewis was discharged from active duty in 1946 and played professional minor league baseball with the Pittsburgh and Cleveland franchises; ending his career when he damaged his throwing arm. Recalled to active duty in 1950; with the Korean Conflict; he served in Japan; Korea; French Morocco; Panama; Thailand and back to Korea in 1961. While in Panama; he was a member of the Joint-Services Inspector General team that visited various countries in both Central and South America that had military groups assigned to them. Having served a total of 28 years of active duty; he retired in 1976. His decorations included the Soldiers Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; American Campaign Medal; Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leave clusters; European-African-Mid East Campaign Medal; World War 2 Victory Medal; Korean Service Medal with two Battle Stars; Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation; United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. In 1977; he joined the Pennsylvania Turnpike and served as the Human Resources Representative until his retirement in 1991. He was a long time member of the VFW; Post 167 of Charleroi; the Fairhope Rod and Gun Club; the Air Force Sergeants Association; AARP and was an honorary member of the Pennsylvania Sheriff’s Association. Survivors include his wife of 56 years; June L. Lewis; two daughters and sons-in-law; Shelly and James Hardison of Williamston; NC and Vicki and Loyal Gregory of Moss Point MS; one granddaughter; Heather R. Arment and her husband; Robert of Castle Shannon; two grandsons; R.J. and Ricky Hardison of Williamston; NC; one great-granddaughter Madeline June Arment and one sister; Shirley A. Pullion of Charleroi. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by one brother; Paul E. Lewis. Dalton L. Brant; 78; formerly of Belle Vernon; passed away Monday; July 12; 2010; at 8:55 a.m. in the Caring Place; Franklin; after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born Jan. 1; 1932; in Hunker; he was the son of the late Kenneth and Elizabeth DeHappart Brant. He graduated from West Newton High School in 1950; and worked at Robertshaw (Westinghouse) from 1951 to 1953. He then worked for Bell Telephone of PA until he retired from Bell Atlantic in 1985. During his career at Bell Telephone; he served as an installer; commercial rep and Right of Way agent. He was president of the Pittsburgh Employees Activities Association; and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He was very active in his church and community. He was a member of the Fayette City United Methodist Church; where he taught Sunday School as well as being a Youth Leader; lay speaker; chairman of the Administrative board; Chairman of Trustees and he sang in the church choir. He was a member of Tri-County Lodge No. 252 Free and Accepted Masons; Gourgas Lodge of Perfection; and the Scottish Rite Freemasonry. He was a United Way Loan Officer and a Junior Achievement Advisor. He was a member of the BTRAP Campers; and also belonged to Family Campers and RV’ers (FCRV) where he held offices of Field Director and State Chaplain. He was given the National Humanitarian Award; as well as numerous other service awards for entertaining as Rosebud. His interests included fishing; camping; music; traveling; lapidary; woodworking; canoeing; painting and hunting. He was a devoted and loving husband of the late Dorothy G. Brant for 53 years; as well as the loving father of Dena Brant; of Middlebourne; W.Va.; Donna and Roy Schmoutz; of Franklin; and proud grandfather of Christopher Schmoutz; of Shreveport; La.; Seth Huffman; of Akron; Ohio; and Rachael and Nathaniel Greenway; of Uniontown. He is also survived by a son-in-law; Robert Huffman; of North Canton; Ohio; sisters and brothers-in-law; Ardith and Robert Hamilton; of McKeesport; Joan and Charles Elgin; of Clinton; Md.; Gene Gantner; John and Enid Gantner; Robert and Patricia Gantner; Thomas and Elizabeth Gantner; and Jim Ritenour; sisters-in law; Gloria and Frank Pansino; Alvera Zolock; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife; he was preceded in death by his daughter; Debra Huffman; brother-in-law; Edward Gantner; and sisters-in-law; Delores Ritenour and Gladys Gantner. George W. Diethorn; 92; of Belle Vernon; went to be with the Lord on Monday; April 2; 2012; in Monongahela Valley Hospital. A son of the late George and Teresa Funk Diethorn; he was born in North Belle Vernon on Oct. 23; 1919. He was a member; elder and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon; member; past president and Melvin Jones recipient of the Belle Vernon Lions Club; a former North Belle Vernon councilman and; in the 1960s; served as a scoutmaster for several years. George served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired after 42 years of service with the Peoples Natural Gas Co.
