Prior to his retirement;he was employed at the Donora Works of U.S.Steel Corp. He was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church;Fayette City;and was a former member of the Rostraver and Curfew granges. He was preceded in death by a brother;Wilford Martin. Funeral services were held this morning for Michael J.Mitchell of 1360 Fayette Ave.;Belle Vernon (Fairhope);who died Sunday;July 3;1988;at 10:30 a.m.in Jefferson Center Hospital. He was 90. Mr.Mitchell was born Feb.25;1898;in Belle Vernon;a son of the late Carmen and Mary Paglial Mitchell. A lifelong resident of the Belle Vernon area;he was Catholic. At the time of his death;Mr.Mitchell was serving as an auditor for Washington Township;a position he held for 12 years. He was a past president and officer of the Washington Township School Board;and was a member and the first fire chief of the Washington Township Fire Department. He had also served as Judge of Elections in Washington Township for 12 years. He was a member and past president of the Washington Township Lions Club;and was past president of the Fayette County Fish and Game Commission. A member of the Fayette County Sportsmen’s Association;Mr.Mitchell was a Lifetime Master of the National Rifle Association. He was a charter member of the Fairhope Rod and Gun Club and was a member of the organization’s bowling league. Mr.Mitchell was a member of the Belle Vernon Musical Society and was a sociel member of Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters;Louis Mitchell;Frank Mitchell;James Mitchell;Irma Nardi and Madeline Zucconi. Survivors include his wife;Sue Janus Mitchell;three daughters;Mrs.Edward (Lydia) Urbany of Torrance;Calif.;Mrs.Leo (Vera) McDermott of Allenport and Shirley Toward Gelcheiser of Elizabeth Township;one sister;Carrie Rossi of Belle Vernon;eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr.Mazza was born June 13;1909;in Italy;a son of the late Giuseppe and Lucia Mazza. He was a member of St.Cajetan Catholic Church of Monessen;the Italian Society of Mutual Aid and the Monessen Eagles. In 1972 Mr.Mazza retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.;Monessen plant;where he worked in the pipe shop department.
