Betty L.Tennant;71;of Elizabeth Township;died Wednesday;Feb.8;1995;in Jefferson Hospital. Born Feb.6;1924;in Waynesburg;she was a daughter of the late Charles and Helen Lippencott Lightner. Mrs.Tennant was Protestant by faith. She was a former member and past president of the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Formerly of Washington Township;Mrs.Tennant had lived in Elizabeth Township the past 27 years. She had been employed at the former Sadowski’s Market and S&Y Foodland in Rostraver Township. In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by her husband;Charles R.Tennant Sr.;who died June 4;1987. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law;Charles Jr. and Eileen Tennant of Elizabeth Township;a daughter and son-in-law;Helen Lee and Louis Book of Belle Vernon;five grandchildren;Louis Alan Book;Lou Ann Clayton;Cindy Kossar;Scott Tennant and Brandi Tennant;and two great-grandchildren;Alan Michael Book and Jesse Clayton. Thomas E.Turnbull;67;of Wick Haven;died Sunday;Feb.5;1995;at 6 p.m.in Jefferson Hospital. He was born Oct.26;1927;in Monongahela;a son of the late Thomas and Mary Todd Turnbull. Mr.Turnbull was a graduate of Monongahela High School with the class of 1944. He served with the U.S.Coast Guard during World War II;participating in the Asiatic-Pacific campaign and the American campaign. After 44 years of employment;he retired from Combustion Engineering Company of East Monongahela. He was also employed at Perry Auto Auction. He was a member of the national level of AARP. He was an elder in the Harmony Presbyterian Church. Mr.Turnbull battled Lou Gehrig Disease (ALS) for the past 15 months. Surviving are his wife;Dorothy Ann Hawk Turnbull;four children;Scott Turnbull of Greensburg;Mrs.James (Kathy) Kelly and Mrs.Matthew (Mary Beth) Sweeney II;all of Belle Vernon;and Thomas Mark Turnbull of Wick Haven;and five grandchildren;Lauren;Ryan and Kaytlin Kelly;Corey Turnbull and Matthew Sweeney III. In addition to his parents;he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters;and one grandson;Justin. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. A lifelong resident of Monessen;Mr.Thomas was a member and on-trial deacon of Mt.Calvary Baptist Church. He retired in 1989 from the Allenport plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.;where he was employed as a hooker in the tube mill. In addition to his parents;he was preceded in death by Berry and Anna Peerman;who raised him. Born in Arnold City on April 4;1937;she was a daughter of the late Weldon and Cora Dupree Thrasher. She was an attorney in New York and a professor of sociology at Wayne State University in Detroit;Mich. A graduate of Bellmar High School with the clas of 1955; she went on to receive a B.S.degree in sociology from Blackburn College in 1955;a master degree from Yesinva University in New York in 1979 and a doctorate from Hunter College in sociology in 1988. Survivors include a son;David Annexstein of Berkley;Calif.;a daughter;Leslie Annestein of Arlington;Va.;four sisters;Sylvia Joyner of Las Vegas;Nev.;Sonia Parker and Millicent Sellers;both of Arnold City;and Kathy Wilson of Rochester;N.Y.;and a grandmother;Aggie Dupree of Belle Vernon. In addition to her parents;she was preceded in death by three brothers;Stephen in 1976 and Richard and Melvin Thrasher in 1990.
