The Department of Defense in an official telegram notified Mr.Watkins as follows: Remains of Corporal Melvin Watkins;U.S.Army;escorted by Master Sergeant Willard Tillman;departing Jersey City Monday;October 25;arriving in West Newton Baltimore and Ohio station Oct.25 at 4:44 p.m. The body will be received there and removed to the Toner Funeral Home;North Belle Vernon. Cpl.Watkin’s body was found in a fox-hole where he had been killed by enemy fire. The remains were temporarily interred in Korea and have just recently reached the Jersey City clearing center. Surviving are his father;Albert Watkins;two sisters;Kathryn and Margaret;both at home;three brothers;Raymond;Albert;Jr.and Robert;all of Belle Vernon. Russell L.Wergin;46;of 24 Mulberry street;Belle Vernon;died Thursday;July 29;1954;of a heart attack while at Pittsburgh Steel Co.in Monessen. Mr.Wergin;a brakeman for the Monessen Southwestern Railroad;was reporting for work on the 7 a.m.-3 p.m.shift when he was stricken with his fatal attack shortly after 6:30 a.m. Company officials said that he collapsed and died outside the railroad round house at the East end of the Monessen plant. He had just been driven to work by his wife;Catherine. employed by the plant railroad since February;1948;Mr.Wergin was pronounced dead at the plant hospital by Dr.R.J.Herron. He is survived by his wife;Catherine Wergin;two daughters;Latricia and Linda;at home;one son;James;at home;four sisters;Mrs.Margaret Novak;of Youngstown;Ohio;Mrs.Joseph Reda;of Monessen;Mrs.Clarence Albright;of Belle Vernon;and Mrs.Earl Gosney;of Roscoe;four brothers;Edward and John;both of the state of Oklahoma;Carla and William;both of Youngstown;Ohio.
