Harriet L. Ward-Wilcox; 78; of Pittsburgh; went home to be with the Lord on Saturday; Aug. 20; 2005. She was born Dec. 15; 1926; in Monessen; a daughter of the late Edward and Margaret Ward. She was a 1944 graduate of Monessen High School and a graduate of the School of Cosmetology. Mrs. Wilcox was the first black secretary to be employed at the Westmoreland County Courthouse in Greensburg. She was a graduate of Connelly Skilled Training Center; Pittsburgh Public School System; where she received her license to become a Licensed Practical Nurse in October 1964. Mrs. Wilcox was employed as a nurse at Magee-Womens Hospital; Pittsburgh; and later retired from The Veterans Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was baptized in Union Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband; Cortez Wilcox Sr.; two sons; Cortez Wilcox Jr. and Derek Wayne Wilcox; three sisters; Dorothy Carter; Edna Gambrill; and a twin sister to Robert Ward; five brothers; Ernest; Albert; Donald; Robert and Edward Jr. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters; Celeste James and Alyce Aldrich; two brothers; Edward Boogie and Herman Ward; four sisters; Mary Ward-Smith; Darlene Pugh; Minister Millie Thomas and Lois Ward; seven grandchildren; Charles; Tracie; Lisa; Derek; Kimberly; Larry Jr. and Aaron; and seven great-grandchildren; Santosha; Ikeem; Daron; Tiara; Nazir; Denzel and Brennan. John A. Jack Coates Sr.;62;of Rostraver Township;died Friday;Aug.19;2005;at 10:06 a.m.at his home. A kind;caring;compassionate man went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Sept.11.1942;in Fayette City; he was the son of the late Peter and Charlotte Dean-Ashton Coates. Mr.Coates was a resident of Rostraver Township;having previously resided in Speers and Fayette City;and he was a member of Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church in Fayette City. Jack worked for the United Steel Workers of America. He was assistant director for District 10 for the State of Pennsylvania. Jack started his career at the Allenport Plant;Local 1187. In the early 1970’a he was appointed grievance committeeman and later elected financial secretary. On March 1;1980;he was appointed staff representative by his mentor;the late Paul Lewis;former director. Jack became sub-director and in 2002 became assistant director to now Director John DeFazio. Jack lived and believed in the union. He believed that all men and women in the workforce should be treated with dignity and receive a decent wage and all should have benefits including hospitalization for employees and their families. He worked hard to accomplish this for many in the Mon Valley and the State of PA. Jack loved to be involved in politics. He was Democratic Committeeman for Wash.County and was involved with the Central Labor Council. Jack also was the District 10 Organizing Coordinator;Coordinator for Area 2 Legislative Committee and the Politaical Action Coordinator for the State of Pa. Her other passions included gardening and sewing. She designed and made all her own clothing and sewed for others as well. He was a retired employee of the Washington Township Municipal Authority; working for 30 years for the water department. John was a member of the PNA in Arnold City; the Naomi Club; and American Legion Post 484; both in Fayette City. He was an avid sportsman; loving hunting and fishing from his camp in Bedford. John was a member of Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church in Fayette City.
