Betty Shine-Hill; 81; of North Belle Vernon; passed away Tuesday; May 6; 2014; at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Born; April 7; 1933; in Charleroi-Monessen Hospital; she was the daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy Shine. In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by her husband; Robert Hill Sr.; daughter; L’Tanya Hill; and sister; Irene Ellis. Betty was a recognizable and dedicated resident who loved her community. She was a lovable; caring lady with a heart made of gold. She served as a motherly figure to people throughout the community. Betty was a 1951 graduate of Vernon High School; a former employee of the U.S. Post Office and worked in a bank. She decided to quit her two jobs to pursue higher education. She graduated from California State College earning a degree in communications and a certificate in reading. She went on to teach at Nathan Hale Junior High School in Cleveland; Ohio; until her retirement. Betty was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she served as president of the usher board. She was vice president of North Belle Vernon Council; treasurer of Mon Valley Transit Authority; school crossing guard at Saint Sebastian Catholic School and Belle Vernon School District; educational chairperson for the Mon Valley NAACP; and served on various community events. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons and one daughter; Robert Le Le” Hill Jr. and Eric Hill of Monessen; Robin Hill Sr.; and Kim Washington of North Belle Vernon; five sisters; Ella Mae Mitchell of Inkster; Mich.; Laura “Chummy” (Dennis) Dunlap of Mitchellville; Md.; Etta (Stanley) Jones of Landover; Md.; Mary Floyd of Silver Springs; Md.; and Roberta Johnson of Washington; D.C.; brother-in-law; Kenny Ellis of Shaker Heights; Ohio; two sons-in-law; Daniel Osborne of Manassas; Va.; and George Washington of Jeannette; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Denise Alberta Davis; 47; of Donora; died Jan. 17; 2010. Born in Washington on Aug. 21; 1962; she was the daugher of the late Jacqueline Bunny (Davis) Miller and George Miller; who survives. Denise worked as a domestic engineer; and was a member of Highland Terrace Counseling. Dorothy Irene Shine Ellis; 76; of Cleveland; Ohio; formerly of Belle Vernon; departed this life on Saturday; Oct. 30; 2010. Born Sept. 7; 1934; in Monessen; she was the third child born to the late Robert and Dorothy Shine. Dorothy graduated from Belmar High School; North Belle Vernon; in 1952. In 1956; Dorothy married Oakley Lawson. Out of this union one child was born. On June 28; 1969; she united in marriage to Kenneth L. Ellis. Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age when she joined Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Cook; in Monessen. She later reunited with Antioch Baptist Church in North Belle Vernon. In 2008; Dorothy united with Providence Baptist Church; in Cleveland; Ohio; under the leadership of Pastor Rodney Maiden. She leaves to cherish her memory; her beloved husband; Kenny; one daughter; Sereda J. Ellis; one granddaughter; Julia Ellis; two stepdaughters; Patricia Wellbuam and Linda Ellis; both of Las Vegas; four sisters; Rosetta (Stanley) Jones; of Landover; Md.; Betty Hill; of North Belle Vernon; Ella Mae Mitchell; of Inkster; Mich.; and Roberta L. Iola Alice Kershaw; 81; of Monongahela; went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday morning; August 9; 2008 in Monongahela Valley Hospital. Born in Santuck; S.C.; on June 24; 1927; she was the daughter of the late Robert H. Thomas and Iola A. Cheek. In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by one son; Timothy Albert Kershaw; in February 2000; one daughter; Laura A. Kershaw; in December 2007; nine brothers and one sister. Iola graduated and taught school in both South and North Carolina and was previously employed by JCPenney as a clerk and at Zajack in Monessen as a health program assistant. She was a dedicated member of St. Paul Baptist Church since 1951; serving on the Usher Board; singing in various choirs; serving as chairperson of various committees and serving as a deaconess until she was lead by the Lord in a dream to move her membership to the Church of Jesus Christ to further her service to him in 1970. It was there she served as a deaconess and was in charge of preparation of the Lord’s Supper. In addition to her husband; Albert Kershaw; she leaves to cherish her memory three daughters; Rasheedah Marie Bilal; of Monongahela; Linda Jean (Lawrence) Phillips; of Inglewood; Calif.; and A. Loretta Carter; of Pittsburgh; two brothers; Jimmie (Peggy) Thomas; of Los Angeles; Calif.; and Rufus Rick Thomas; of Monongahela; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Johnnie Kershaw and Lula Thomas; both of Detroit; Mich.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins and friends. Iola was loved and well known throughout the community; spreading love and joy to all and making a difference in hundreds of lives. All will deeply miss her. Albert Kershaw; 86; of Monongahela; passed away on March 6; 2014. Born June 8; 1927; in Winston Salem; N.C.; he was the son of the late Meeks Kershaw and Ida Foote-Kershaw. He was preceded in death by his wife; Iola Alice Thomas-Kershaw; son; Timothy Albert Kershaw; daughter; Laura Ann Kershaw; brother; Meeks Kershaw; and sister; Elizabeth Gist. Mr. Kershaw was retired from the U.S. Steel Mill; Clairton Works; after being employed for nearly 50 years. A faithful member of St. Paul Baptist Church since 1951; he served as Deacon Emeritus – Deacon for 55 plus years; Chairman of the Deacon Board; member of the Sr. Choir and the WEMB Choir and a Prince Hall Mason of the Commonwealth of Pa. He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters; Rasheedah Marie Bilal of Monongahela; Linda Jean (Lonnie) Phillips of Los Angeles; Calif.; and A.
