Donald Douro; 76; of Fallowfield Township; passed away peacefully from this earth with his family at his side on Friday; Oct. 3; 2008; in Allentown; Pa. He was born July 10; 1932; in East Pittsburgh and was a member of the Coal Center Presbyterian Church and the California American Legion. At age 17; Don enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Following his service in 1953; he moved to Shady Avenue in Charleroi. Don retired from Columbia Gas in 1992 with more than 35 years of service and with many friendships that lasted his lifetime. He was a devoted husband; a loving father and grandfather; and a true friend who was always willing to help anyone in need. ‘Ace’; as he also was known; enjoyed the good things of his life; the outdoors; traveling; adventure and especially his many and long-lasting friendships. As an avid and often vivid story-teller; he entertained many a gathering. His stories brought some of his greatest rewards – the joy and laughter of friends. His knack for storytelling was treasured by many. Hey Ace; tell them the one about was often the way a good story would begin; and laughter and smiles all around is the way it would end. This was a gift he used well and often; and it will surely be missed. Surviving are two sons; Dan (Candice) Douro; of Coopersburg; and John (Christy) Douro; of Ortonville; Mich.; three grandchildren; Rheanna; Rachelle and Dawn; three great-grandchildren; Zachary; Avery and Tanner; two brothers- and sisters-in-law; Edward (Cecil) Verkleeren; of Rostraver Township; and John (Barbara) Verkleeren; of Carlsbad; Calif.; his siblings; Eleanor Wray; of New Eagle; and Andy Duro; of Dorchester; Mass.; and many well loved nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his beloved wife; Norma Jean Verkleeren; on April 29; 1993; and her parents; Isadore and Florence Verkleeren. Friends will be received in the CARL J. SPALLINO FUNERAL HOME; 819 Fallowfield Ave.; Charleroi; on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday; Oct. 8; at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Colvin officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Vera L. Fike; 90; of Lakewood; Ohio; formerly of Charleroi and Belle Vernon; went to be with the Lord on Thursday; July 7; 2011; in Crestmont North Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; Lakewood; Ohio. A daughter of the late Peter L. and Georgina Smock Dudgeon Lehew; she was born in Belle Vernon on March 15; 1921. Vera had resided in Ohio for the past two years and was a member of the Belle Vernon Church of the Nazarene. The last surviving of many brothers and sisters; survivors include one daughter and son-in-law; Patricia and James Maddox; of Cleveland; Ohio; two grandchildren; Donald Maddox; of Parma; Ohio and Jennifer Kirkland; of Florida; and three great-grandchildren; Kayla Maddox and Tanya and Shari Kirkland. There will be no public visitation. Graveside services will be Thursday; July 14; 2011; at 1 p.m. in Belle Vernon Cemetery with Pastor Kelly Brucker officiating.
