Leo A. Makovsky; 94; of Fayette City (Gillespie); passed away on Thursday; September 10; 2009 in the Neveah Cove Independent Living Personal Care Home in Charleroi. Leo was surrounded by his family when he passed away. The owner and employees of the Neveah Cove and Albert Gallatin Hospice were all very compassionate and caring people who helped the family through this very difficult time. A son of the late Joseph and Sophie Brydak Makovsky; he was born in Pricedale on November 26; 1914. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law; Bernadette and Robert Planey of Mt. Joy; PA; two sons and daughters-in-law; Leo E. and Patricia Makovsky of Fayette City; and Gary B. and Charmel Makovsky of Rostraver Twp.; one brother; Edward Makovsky of Pleasant Hill; OR and five great grandchildren; Michele Crivello and husband Ralph of South Park; Nicole Schwartz and husband Robert of Marietta; Robert Planey and wife Amy of Mt. Joy; Tracey Makovsky-Cook of Charleroi and Gary Lee Makovsky and wife Amy of Delmont. In addition; he also enjoyed six great-grandchildren; Jen Crivello; Ralph Crivello; Jr.; Kaila Crivello; Kristie Crivello; Joshua Schwartz and Jonah Schwartz. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his wife; Hazel Wilson Makovsky on December 24; 2001; a sister; Stacey Makovsky and a brother; Thadeus Makovsky. He enjoyed working in his garden and gave most of the fruits and vegetables to his family; friends and neighbors. He was an avid Steelers fan and rarely missed a game. Leo also enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren play softball. He worked at various jobs including being a coal miner; steelworker; construction worker; owner-operator strip mine; and finally retired at age 69 after driving tractor trailer well over two million miles. After retiring; Leo and his wife Hazel toured the United States in a motor home; towing their automobile on a trailer. He was a veteran of World War II; a member of St. Joseph’s Mission Parish Church of Belle Vernon; a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Fayette Legion American Post 484. Friends will be received Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. in the Ferguson Funeral Home and Crematory; Inc.; 700 Broad Avenue; Belle Vernon (724-929-5300); www.FergusonFuneralHomeAndCrematory.com. A blessing service will be in the funeral home Monday at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Felix Pyzowski officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
