James Weir; 90; of Rostraver Township; died Monday; Oct. 6; 2008; in Monongahela Valley Hospital; Carroll Township. He was born in Reynoldsville; W.Va.; Oct. 2; 1918; a son of the late Mary (Marr) Weir and Frank Weir. Mr. Weir graduated from Rostraver Township High School; where he played; football; baseball and basketball. He received a football scholarship to Waynesburg College; where he played guard and linebacker and was elected captain of the team in his senior year. The Waynesburg College football team of 1939 played in the first televised game against Fordham College in New York. He graduated in 1940 and began his teaching career at Rostraver High School. In 1941; he was called for military duty and served his country during World War II until 1945. In 1946; he was discharged and resumed his teaching career. He was a charter member and past president of the Rostraver Township Lions Club and was a life member of the East Belle Vernon Athletic Club and the Belle Vernon American Legion. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; AARP; PASR; the Church of St. Anne in Rostraver Township; served on the Rostraver Township Veterans Memorial Committee; and also attended St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in North Belle Vernon for many years. He is survived by his wife of 59 years; Florence (Johnston) Weir; daughter; Jamie Weir; granddaughter; Julie Anne Weir; sister and brother-in-law; Theresa and Merico Dolfi; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by three brothers; Joe; Sam and John Weir; and three sisters; Grace Lopez; Susan Pellecone and Katherine Huber. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the JAMES C. A blessing service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday in the funeral home; followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church; Belle Vernon; with the Rev. Lawrence L. Manchas as celebrant. Interment with full military honors will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659 will hold a service at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
