Henry E. Vandernitte; 89; of Belle Vernon; passed away Wednesday; July 28; 2010; in Monongahela Valley Hospital. A son of the late Joseph and Nancy Huffman Vandernitte; he was born in Phillipsburg on Aug. 15; 1921. He was a member of the Christian Church of California; retired in 1982 from the Allenport Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Company; and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife; Lorraine Andercheck Kissell Vandernitte; one son; Keith Vandernitte; of Spartanburg; SC; five stepchildren; Sandy and Larry Solomon; of Elizabeth; Cheryl and Jack Knight; of Canonsburg; John Paul and Marie Kissell; of Monessen; Tim and Barbara Kissell; of Mucungie Borough; and Melanie Kissell; of Arcadia; Calif.; 40 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one sister; Rita Lutz; of California; and three sisters-in-law; Sonya Andercheck; Dorothy Janosik; and Grace Vandernitte. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his wives; Louise Houston Vandernitte; and Mary O’Brien Pupelli Vandernitte; one daughter; Gail Barone; and one brother; Joe Vandernitte. IRENE A. SOROKA
Irene A. Soroka; 81; of North Belle Vernon; went to be with the Lord on Tuesday; July 27; 2010; in Pinecrest Manor; St. Mary’s; following a brief illness. A daughter of the late Joseph and Wincintina Kuczynska Seroka; she was born in Monessen on Jan. 13; 1929. Irene worked as an operator for the former Bell Atlantic telephone company until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church and the Verizon Pioneers. She had been a resident of North Belle Vernon for the past five years and formerly lived in Las Vegas; Belle Vernon and Monessen. Irene loved traveling and enjoyed playing slots throughout the United States. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law; Deanne and Roger Nogy; of Emporium; one sister and brother-in-law; Dolores and Robert Warbutton; of Florida; one grandson; Sean Panek and his wife; Heather; of Monongahela; two stepgrandchildren; Katherine Nogy; of Stockdale; and Alan Nogy; of North Charleroi; two sisters-in-law; Jacqueline Seroka; of Monessen; and Beverly Seroka; of Belle Vernon; a special niece and godchild; Joanne Kustra; of Greensburg; several nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; her best friend of 71 years; Mary Martin; of Live Oak; Texas; and her granddog; Shadow. In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by three sisters; Alexandra Brozinski; of Eldora; who passed away two days prior to Irene; Wanda Torbar; and Mary Cinereski; and two brothers; Felix Seroka and Edward Seroka. SCOTT R. WOOD
Scott R. Wood; 43; of Belle Vernon; formerly of Greensburg; died Tuesday; July 20; 2010; in Excela Westmoreland Hospital; Greensburg. He was born June 25; 1967; in Plattsburg; N.Y.; a son of Charles R. and Becky L. Harden Wood; of Greensburg. He was a 1986 graduate of Greater Latrobe High School and Eastern Westmoreland Vo-Tech and then attended Vale Tech in Blairsville. Scott had previously been employed by Sears Automotive and NTB; both in Greensburg; and was currently employed as the mechanic at Westmoreland Triumph Sales of Greensburg; Mt. Pleasant Road. Scott was well-known for his love of riding his Moto-Guzzi with friends and participating in bike runs and related events. Scott was predeceased by an infant son; Elijah O. Wood; in 1997. In addition to his parents; he is survived by two sisters; Susan L. Eutsey and her husband; Scott; of Indian Head; and Michelle L. Horner and her husband; Ben; of Latrobe; a stepdaughter; Rachel Eyles; of Irwin; and the following nieces and nephews; Ashley Lynn and Aimee Ann Eutsey and Robert Owen; Sara Michelle and Shannon Michelle Demine. Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME INC.; 505 E. Pittsburgh St.; Greensburg. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Revs. Don Graff; Doug Nolt and Ed Mikkelson officiating. Interment will follow in the Belle Vernon Cemetery; Belle Vernon.
