Hospital after being stricken by an
apparent heart attack.
He was 58.
Mr. Alvarez was born March 16;
1930; in New Eagle; a son of Mary
Campa Alvarez of Donora and the
late Jose Alvarez Sr.
He had been a police officer in the
Borough of Donora since 1954; and
was named chief in 1976.
A U.S. Army veteran of the
Korean Conflict; Mr. Alvarez was a
member of the Mon Valley Police
Chiefs Association and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 87. A 1948 graduate of Donora high School;he was also a member of the Spanish Club and Ernest E.Jobes Post 212 American Legion;both in Donora. In addition to his mother;survivors include his wife;Shirley Louise Alvarez;a daughter; Mrs John (Twila Marie) Rank of Houston;Texas;one son;Jose Alvarez III at home;a grandson;James Joseph Rank;a granddaughter;Hallie Kay Rank;many aunts;uncles;nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.in the James A.Rabe Funeral Home;701 Thompson Ave.;Donora;where services will be held Monday;Oct.31;1988;at 10 a.m.with the Rev.Andrew G.Slade;pastor of Calvary United Presbyterian Church of Donora;officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The James A. Rabe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Baumgardner;73;of Grindstone;formerly of Denbo;died Thursday;Feb.18;1988;in the Wightman Health Center;Pittsburgh. Mr.Baumgardner was born Nov.9;1916;in Cambria County;Pa.;a son of the late Oliver and Mary Benson Baumgardner. He retired as a coal miner with the Vesta Number 5 Mine. Mr.Baumgardner was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of West Brownsville;which he served as a Sunday School teacher and elder. In addition to his parents;he was also preceded in death by his first wife;Anna Mae Lint Baumgardner;who died in 1985;by one daughter;Mary Margaret Baumgardner;by two grandchildren;by one great-grandchild;and by three brothers;Leo;James and Norman Baumgardner. Surviving are his second wife;Hazel Stuchslager Baumgardner;four sons;Eugene Baumgardner of Akron;Ohio;Jerome Baumgarder of Willoughby;Ohio;and Roy and David Baumgardner;both of Denbo;three daughters;Mrs.Edward (Patricia) Woods of Denbo;Mrs.Charles (Karen) Laucher of Canonsburg;and Mrs.Wilbur (Sharon) McIntosh of Brownsville;24 grandchildren;three great-grandchildren;two stepsons;Roger Stuchslager in South Carolina and Larry Stuchslager of Grindstone;two stepdaughters;Mrs.John (Cindy) Ritter of Fayette City and Mrs.Douglas (Bonnie) Brown of Monessen;eight stepgrandchildren;two brothers;Arthur Baumgardner in Colorado and Lawrence Baumgardner of Johnstown;Pa.;and two sisters;Carmella Lahti of Fayette City and Catherine Smith of Herminie;Pa. James A.Alessio of 633 Speers Ave.;Speers Hill;Charleroi;died Wednesday;Aug.5;1987;at 5:17 p.m.in Mon Valley Hospital. He was 62. Mr.Alessio was born Nov.15;1924;in Belle Vernon;a son of the late Domenico and Maria Teresa Mirendi Alessio. He was a member of the Speers United Methodist Church;Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659 and retired Employees of the Allenport Plant (REAP). A U.S.Navy veteran of World War II;Mr.Alessio retired in 1980 from the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.;Allenport Plant;where he worked as a craneman. A Speers resident since 1965;Mr.Alessio had previously lived in Charleroi and Belle Vernon. In addition to his parents;he was preceded in death by Anthony Alessio;in 1975;and by a son;Hugh Bud McBurnie. Survivors include his wife;Oleada Riskey Alessio;a son;D.Richard McBurnie of Coal Center R.D.1;a brother;Frank Alessio of Donora;two sisters;Mrs.Ted (Theresa) Spazok of Belle Vernon and Rose Steinbaugh of North Charleroi;seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
