John J.Godla of 1319 Graham Ave.;Monessen;died Wednesday;Aug.5;1981;at 1:15 p.m. in St.Clair Memorial Hospital. He was 72. Mr.Godla;who had been in declining health;was born in Hahntown;Westmoreland County;on June 6;1909. A resident of Monessen for the past 64 years;he had learned the plumbing trade while working for his father-in-law;Ely Laganier;who had a business in Monessen. He later took over the business and called it Godla Heating and Plumbing. Mr.Godla;a U.S.Navy veteran of World War II;retired in 1975. He was a Past Chancelor Commander of former Monessen Lodge Knights of Pythians;Past Commander of Thomas McKee Post American Legion;and Past Deputy Commander of the American Legion 31st District. Mr.Godla was also a member of St.Cajetan R.C.Church and the VFW. Survivors include his widow;Marguerite Laganier Godla;one daughter;Mrs.Anthony (Roberta) Haradin of Mt.Lebanon;one son;Elie Godla of Philadelphia;two grandchildren;Ray and David Haradin;one sister;Mrs.Mary Dzurko of Perryopolis;and four brothers;Steve of Monessen;Frank of Perryopolis;Louis of McLane;Va.;and Joseph of Vermont. Nathan Goff Jr.;president of the Mon Valley Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP);died Wednesday;April 22;1981 in the Mon Valley Hospital;Inc.;Carroll Twp. Mr.Goff;56;had resided at 7 Birch St.;Charleroi. Born Sept.8;1924 in Charleroi;he was the son of the late Nathan Goff Sr.and Clara Grable Goff. Mr.Goff was active in a number of civic and community projects in the Mon Valley. He had served as president of the Mon Valley NAACP for the past eight years and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Conference of the NAACP;serving on the political action committee. Mr.Goff was initially named to the NAACP presidency in the Mon Valley to fill a vacancy created by the death of Mr.Harry McGraw of Monessen. Mr.Goff then won election to a full two-year term in 1974 and was re-elected in 1976;1978 and 1980. He was a member of the Washington County Housing Authority and had served as the authority’s secretary. He also was a former member of the Board of Directors of United Way of Mon Valley. Mr.Goff retired as a postal carrier with the U.S.Postal Service in 1978;working from the Charleroi Post office;with 27 years of service. He was a graduate of Charleroi Area High School;where he starred as a football player;and was a World War II veteran;having served with the U.S.Army. An active member of the Antioch Baptist Church;Belle Vernon;Mr.Goff had served as a trustee of the church;president of the Building Fund;and an assistant Sunday School teacher in the adult class. He was also a member of the Antioch Baptist Church prayer band. Mr.Goff was a member and past master of the Twin Lodge No.67;F&AM;Pricedale. Also;he was a member of the Most Excellent Grand Chapter;Holy Royal Arch;Masons of Pennsylvania;Prince Hall affiliate;and the Eleventh Masonic District;serving as chairman of education. He was also a member of the OK Lodge No.697;I.B.P.O.E.of W.and the American Legion William E.Owens Post 695;both of Monessen. Survivors include his widow;Mary Ann Wilson Goff;two sons;Nathan Goff III at home and Keith Goff of Brooklyn;N.Y.;a daughter;Natalie Goff of Hempstead;Long Island;N.Y.;a sister;Audrey Goff of Cleveland;Ohio;two brothers;Robert H.Goff of New york City and Gilbert Goff of Yonkers;N.Y.;and a host of nieces;nephews and cousins. Friends will be received in the William R.Taylor Funeral Home;615 McMahon Ave.;Monessen;on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.and Friday from noon to 2 p.m. At that time;Mr.Goff will be taken to the Antioch Baptist Church;Belle Vernon;and will lie in state there until Saturday at 11 a.m.;the time of service. John W.Gray;formerly of the Belle Vernon Apartments;Belle Vernon;died Tuesday;Feb.17;1981 at 8:45 a.m.in Uniontown Hospital. He was 92. Born July 26;1888 in Vanderbilt;he was the son of the late John W.and Mary White Gray. He had lived in Belle Vernon the last 35 years;having formerly resided in Monessen. Mr.Gray was a retired car repairman for the Monessen-Southwestern Railway of the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel;Monessen plant. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon. Mr.Gray was preceded in death by his wife;Bessie Lint Gray;on March 21;1968;and a son;Eugene Gray;on May 22;1974. Survivors include one son;Terry Gray of Belle Vernon;three daughters;Mrs.Naomi Jones of Coraopolis;Helen Gray of Altoona;and Mrs.Harry C.(Wanda) Ellison of Belle Vernon;a sister;Mrs.Mossie Evans of Vanderbilt;and 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs.Thresa Gogones of Perryopolis R.D.2 died suddenly in her home on Monday;February 16;1981 at 11:45 a.m. She was 82. Mrs.Gogones was born October 15;1898 in Mount Pleasant;a daughter of the late Thomas and Magdeline Schymanski Grabiak. She was a member of Saint John the Baptist R.C.Church in Perryopolis. Mrs.Gogones was also a member of the Morning Star Grange No.1271 and the Ladies Auxiliary to Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Company. She was predeceased by her husband;George;in 1972.
