Sgt.Melvin Spiker;22;former Marion High School athlete and honor student;was killed in action in France on July 8;1944;his parents;Mr.and Mrs.Emerson Spiker of Fairhope;were notified in a telegram from the War Department. Sergeant Spiker;who was class president for his four high school years and valedictorian of his graduating class;had been in service two years and overseas four months. Before entering the armed forces he was employed at the Macbeth Division of the Corning Glass Works in Charleroi. He was assistant Boy Scout Master of Fairhope Troop One before entering the service. Surviving are his parents;two brothers;Elmer and Emerson;Jr.;two sisters;Marion and Gladys and two cousins who made their home with his parents;Genevieve Philp and Connie Carr. His body will arrive in Charleroi Thursday morning;June 3;1948;at 11 a.m.;and will be taken immediately to the McCrory Funeral Home;and later to the home of his parents in Fairhope. Services will be held there Saturday;June;1948;at 2 p.m.;in charge of Rev.George Guess and Major Neil Hood;the latter of the Salvation Army at Allentown. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery;where the Belle Vernon American Legion Post will have charge of military rites. George M.McCrory and Son are the funeral directors.

Phillip L.Steinmiller;age 54 years;of Fifth street extension;Charleroi;died at his home;Friday;May 21;1948;at 3:55 a.m. He was a member of the Eagles;the Charleroi Presbyterian Church;and was employed for twenty-nine years by the Pittsburgh Steel company. Louis Allen Saunders;1000 Nash avenue;Monessen;died Monday;January 26;1948;at 5:45 p.m.in the McKeesport Hospital of a broken neck suffered Saturday;when an automobile in which he was riding overturned and slid down an embankment near Donora. He was born in Belle Vernon January 13;1915 and had resided in Monessen for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Wayman A.M.E.Church. He was a World War II veteran;having served in the U.S.Army.
