May Higby Rasco; of Monessen; passed away Saturday; Nov. 13; 2004; at her home. She was born in Scott Haven; Pa.; Dec. 2; 1917; daughter of the late James and Ada Hughes Higby. She was a graduate of Sewickley Township High School and California State Teachers College. She spent her years of teaching in the country schools of Scott Haven and Cowansburg; Pa. May had beautiful handwriting and was offered a teaching position to travel to local schools and teach the Peterson Handwriting Method; but she preferred to stay at the one-room schoolhouse where she taught over 50 pupils; grades one through six. During World War II; she contributed to the war effort by working at the Christy Park Works. She was a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Monessen for many years. In 1949; she married Thomas Rasco; who died in August 1997. She is the beloved mother of two daughters; Kathy Striker and Peggy Frances Bilsky; and one stepson; Thomas Rasco; loving grandmother of Cindy Reichert; Lisa May Reichert; Erik Striker; Michael Rasco and Melissa Bilsky Lemley; and two great-grandsons; Kaleb and Jayden Lemley. Alfred Carini; 78; of Belle Vernon; died Tuesday; Nov. 9; 2004; in Havencrest Nursing Center; Carroll Township. A son of the late Dino and Alberta Sphar Greene Carini; he was born in Belle Vernon on Aug. 9; 1926. Protestant by faith; he was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and had lived most of his adult life in Belle Vernon. He retired from the New York Transit Authority; where he was a principal cashier; and he served for 20 years in the U.S. Army. Survivors include one brother; Deno Carini; one nephew; Dennis Carini and wife Carrie; and one great-niece and -nephew; Chelsea and Dennis J. Carini; all of Belle Vernon. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Charleroi and a former member of Monessen Presbyterian Church; where she had taught Sunday school; and was a former member of Eastern Star. Mrs. Cesovski was an employee of W.T. Grant in Monessen as the credit manager. She is survived by her husband; Michael Cesovski Jr.; one son; Martin J. Louis M. Kunka; 82; of Rostraver Township; died Thursday; Oct. 21; 2004 in his home. Born in Monessen on Oct. 10; 1922; he was the son of the late Michael and Mary Keller Kunka. He was retired from the United States Bureau of Mines; where he worked as a lab technician. Mr. Kunka was a member of First Christian Church of Monessen; the Mon Valley Chordsmen and an ardent sports fan for the Pittsburgh Steelers; the Pirates and the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife; Martha Cathers Kunka; two sons; Monte Kunka and wife Toni-Jo of Rostraver Township and Kurt Kunka of State College; three daughters; Kimberly Garr and husband Larry of Upper Marlboro; Md.; Lori Holland and fiance Rob Surrett of Rochester Hills; Mich.; and Jody Parente and fiance Larry Hussar of Belle Vernon; five grandchildren; Jeremy Holland; Jillian Kunka; Jessica and Jeffrey Parente; and Brittany Garr. Having come from Poland in 1930; he worked as a coal miner at various locations throughout the area and as the custodian for St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in Belle Vernon.
