Ronald Rossi; 86; of Rostraver Township; passed away peacefully Saturday; May 19; 2012; in his sleep. A son of the late Ramano and Ernesta Lenzini Rossi; he was born April 5; 1926; in Dunlevy. A graduate of Charleroi High School; he was on the baseball and bowling teams. He attended the University of Pittsburgh; where he played soccer and was a placekicker on the football team. Ron also served his country in the Korean War as an Army Sergeant First Class; where he received a special commendation and honorable discharge in 1952. After his service; he returned to Charleroi where he owned and operated two service stations before taking a job at Charleroi Federal Savings Bank; where he served as vice president of lending before retiring in 1998. In addition to recognition during his professional career; he was known for his 50-plus years of contributions to soccer. He grew up in one of the most renowned athletic families in the Mon Valley and began playing soccer for Gallatin in the Junior Keystone League in the early 1940s. Growing up in Dunlevy; you did one of two things; played soccer or went swimming in the river. Ron gained national attention in the late 1940s; participating in the U.S. Olympic trials and made the final 30-man selection group for the 1948 Olympics. He spent most of his career playing for the Dunlevy Redbirds and helped them win several championships. Over his 15-year playing career; Ron gained national prominence in Amateur and Open Cup tournaments playing against some of the top teams and players in the sport. After he retired as a player; Ron coached soccer teams and officiated youth soccer games in the area and was instrumental in the formation of the Mon Valley Youth Soccer League in the late 1970s. He and his wife; Adele are credited with establishing the foundation for the successful youth and scholastic soccer programs in the Belle Vernon Area School District. In 1998; Ron was elected to the Mid-Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame; where he joined his brother Roger; elected in 1975. Through his life and particularly in retirement; Ron was also known for growing fresh; organic vegetables for family and friends. Whether it was his famous Ox-Heart tomatoes or his fresh Swiss chard; he had a great passion for all natural vegetable gardening. In 2001; he received a gardening award from the Mon Valley Garden Club. Ron will be terribly missed by his family and his many friends. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law; Randy and Lynne Rossi; one granddaughter; Alexandra Rossi; all of Greensburg; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law; Jack Sutherland; Jay and Martha Sutherland; all of Speers Hill; and Joyce and Ron Danko; of Monessen; and many nieces and nephews. Vera M. Lomax; 82; of Monessen; passed away on Saturday; May 12; 2012; peacefully at her home. Born Sept. 16; 1929; in Georgia; she was the daughter of the late Alberta Littleton-Stanley. In addition to her parent; she was preceded in death by her husband; William Piggy Lomax Jr.; two brothers; Curtis Curly and Jesse Littleton. Vera moved to Donora at an early age with her family and attended the Donora school system; graduating in 1948. She married the love of her life; William Piggy Lomax Jr.; on July 15; 1950. Shortly after their marriage; they relocated to Brooklyn; N.Y.; where she resided until 1986 when she returned to the Mon Valley. Vera was a compassionate; extremely honest; and fiercely loyal woman who cherished her family. She was a very prayerful woman who loved the Lord. She was a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church in Donora. She will be remembered in love by her daughter; Vicky Lomax; of Monessen; one sister; Anna B. Smith; of Sorrento Springs; Fla.; one aunt; Jessie Mitchell; of Queens; N.Y.; a special nephew; Darnell Littleton; two nieces; Toni Briggs and Elanore Littleton; who served as her caretakers during her illness; and a host of other nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. Paula M. Weibl; 87; of N. Belle Vernon; passed away Wednesday; May 9th; 2012 in Jefferson Regional Medical Center. A daughter of the late John and Mary Kurpiel Caban; she was born on November 6; 1924 in Newell. Paula was a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church; the former Catholic Daughters of the Americas of the church and Mon Valley Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She had been a resident of N. Belle Vernon most of her adult life. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law; Daniel and Linda Weibl of Belle Vernon and one granddaughter; Danielle Weibl of Belle Vernon. James Carl Clutter; Sr.; 70; of Pricedale; went to be with the Lord on Monday; May 7th; 2012 in UPMC Mercy Hospital; Pittsburgh. A son of the late Port Waycaster and Ella Mae Ables; he was born in Stotesbury; WV on May 16; 1941. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion; Post 659; both of Belle Vernon. He had been a resident of Charleroi until moving to Silver Spring; MD in 1968 then moved to Pricedale in 1994. Jim was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Postal Service for 28 years; retiring in 1992. She was an avid traveler in and out of the US including a medical missionary trip to Kenya. Her boundless energy and passion for learning continued into her retirement; evidenced by her most recent job at Universal Studios in Orlando; Fl; where she made her winter home in nearby Leesburg.
