Robert Matson of 433 Rostraver Road;Belle Vernon;died Monday;March 17;1986;at 1:33 p.m. in Monongahela Valley Hospital;Carroll Twp.;following a brief illness. Mr.Matson was 60. He was born April 17;1925;in Charleroi;a son of the late Bert G.and Violet Fleming Matson Sr. Before retiring;he was employed by the River Transportation Division of U.S.Steel Corp. Mr.Matson was a U.S.Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of Brightwell-Daugherty Post 484 of The American Legion in Fayette City. He was a Protestant by faith;and also was a member of the Fairhope Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of the Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association and Fayette County Firemen’s Association and he had been a member of the Washington Twp.Fire Company for 19 years;having served as its president for a period of time. Mr.Matson also was active with the Washington Twp-Fayette City Community Ambulance Service since its inception in 1978. A spokesman for CAS called him the ultimate volunteer . Mr Matson held virtually every office in CAS and was recognized as being most instrumental in its growth. As an Emergency Medical Technician;his positions included vice president;assistant chief;equipment manager;transfer manager;and uniform committee chairman. Mr Matson was a member of the CAS board of directors for six years. He also oversaw construction of the CAS operations building in 1981;built many facilities himself;raised considerable funds for the ambulance service;drove on hundreds of ambulance trips;and played a large part in practically every function of the all-volunteer organization;the CAS spokesman noted. He was affectionately known to CAS members as Pap and Uncle Bob . Cas President Dick BLack and Joe Grata;CAS president from its 1978 founding through 1982;who worked closely with Mt.Matson;issued the following statement on his death: CAS deeply mourns the loss of a friend and co-worker;Mr.Robert Matson;who was an inspiration to us all with his dedication;determination and unselfishness. He literally gave his life to save other lives. CAS was;indeed;his second home and second family. His mark on the community;and the ambulance service is an incredible one. someone once asked how many hours Mr.Matson volunteered at CAS. The answer was easy;more than 24 hours a day. Mr.Matson continued his work at CAS undeterred by his own medical history because his spiritual heart was bigger and stronger than the one that cost his life . CAS will post an honor guard at the casket at the McCrory Funeral Home in Fayette City during visitations today and tomorrow as a tribute to his memory; Black and Grata stated. Cas No.2;the ambulance in which Mr.Matson did much of his work;will serve as his hearse at Thursday’s burial;they added. A lifelong resident of Monessen;she was a member of Mt.Calvary Baptist Church. She was also treasurer of the Air Cloud Club and a member of the Needlepoint Club. Dr.Charles L.Melenyzer of Rostraver Twp.died Wed.;Jan.15;1986;at 8:45 a.m. in Monongahela Valley Hosp.;Carroll Twp.Dr.Melenyzer;a prominent businessman & civic leader in the Mon Valley;was 94.He was born Dec.3;1891;at Maple Creek;Pa.a son of the late Charles L.& Stephanie Melenyzer.In addition to his parents;he also was preceded in death by a daughter;Gladys M.Kelly in 1978.He was a dairy farmer in Rostraver Twp.;& he owned and operated the Melenyzer Furniture stores in Donora;Monongahela and Charleroi.He ran the Charleroi store from 1919-1981.In July of 1912;he opened a furniture business in Belle Vernon.At the same time;he also was a funeral director and operated the Melenyzer Funeral Home in Belle Vernon. In his 45 years as a funeral director;he conducted approximately 5;000 funerals.In addition he owned the Gladmore Hotel in Miami;Fla.;& was the prime developer of the Rosemont Plan in Rost.Twp.;& the Charmel Manor in Speers.He attended Ohio Northern Univ. Among his many accomplishments in his lifetime are the following: Past president of United Furniture Stores;vice president of Peoples National Bank in Belle Vernon;1920;vice president of First National Bank in Charleroi;1934;member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Wash.;school director in Rostraver Twp.for 12 yrs;chairman of the Mon Valley Chapter of The American Red Cross;1966;Charmel Farms in Rostraver Twp.;1950. Organizer of the C.L.Melenyzer Golf Tournment held annually at Mon Valley Country Club;member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Charleoi Industrial Development Corp.;honorary Life Member of the Charleoi Chamber of Commerce;life member of the Charleroi-Monessen Hospital Assoc.;past president of Heritage Corporation of Chicago;charter member of Rostraver Twp.Business Assoc.;member of Monongahela Chamber of Commerce. A community-minded citizen;he was a member of many organizations. Among them were Mon Valley Country Club;Downtown Press Club;Pitts.Athletic Assoc.;Rotary Club;Elks Club and City Farmers Club. His work as a great humanitarian and his love for the Mon Valley earned him numerous awards. Among them are the following;Chosen as Citizen of the Year;1978 by Post 22 of The Amer.Legion in Charleroi;Doctorate Degree in Commercial Science in 1961 from Bethany College in Bethany;W.Va.;Bronze Bison Award;1971 from Bethany College;Allison R.Maxwell Award;1978;Lifetime membership in the Amer.Red Cross;1979. He was also involved with Mon Valley Hospital for many years. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the hospital from June 1977-August 1982;and he served on the Physician Recruitment Committee of the Board of Directors from 1977-82. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of the health care corporation. Gust Melissas of the Heritage Nursing Home;Baltimore;Md.;formerly of Monessen;died Friday;Jan.10;1986;in the Heritage Nursing Home;Baltimore;Md. He was 92. Mr.Melissas was born in June of 1894;in Chios;Greece; a son of the late Nicholas and Mary Melissas. He was a retired employee of the Monessen School District. Mr.Melissas came to Monessen in 1915 from Chios;Greece;where he was well known as a library fundraiser. In 1966;he and his late wife;Mary;who died in 1967;were honored by the Grecian government and by the mayor of Athens;Greece;for their many charitable and civic contributions. Mr.Melissas was president of the Monessen Chapter of the United Chios Society of America. He also served as national treasurer of that organization. In addition to his parents and his wife;Mr.Melissas was also preceded in death by two brothers;Steve Melissas in 1968;and Michael Melissas;in 1972;and by a sister;Anna Pappas;in 1955. Surviving are three daughters;Mrs.Frank (Marie) Herman of Gettysburg;Pa.;Mrs.Robert (Catherine) Valko of Kingsville;Md.;and Joan Haugen of Sproughton;Wisc.;and five grandchildren.
