Former North Belle Vernon Burgess Steven Leroy Jones died Wednesday afternoon;April 18;1962;in Charleroi-Monessen Hospital after an extended illness. He was 62. Mr.Jones was one of the community’s most active members befors a serious illness forced him into semi-retirement in 1960. He was hospitalized weeks ago. For 14 1/2 years;he served as burgess of North Belle Vernon. Before that;Mr.Jones was fire chief from 1928 to 1930 and police chief from 1930 to 1937. He resigned during his fourth term as burgess in June of 1960 because of failing health. Mr.Jones was a charter member of the Belle Vernon Lions Club and belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He worshipped at the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon. Born in Roscoe on Aug.7;1899;he was the son of the late David and Anna Morrison Jones. Most of his adult life was spent in North Belle Vernon. At the time of his death;he was on sick leave from the Allenport plant of the Pittsburgh Steel Co.where he was employed as a guard. Survivors include his widow Mrs.Lula Whitelaw Jones;at home;213 Speers St.;and one sister;Mrs.Jack Frazier;Belle Vernon. The body of a Belle vernon man was recovered from the Monongahela River early today;Sept.2;1961;near the Gibson yards of the Pittsburgh Steel Co. Westmoreland County Coroner Stephen Yoney identified the victim as Harry E.Johnson;40;of 122 Main St.;Belle Vernon. Johnston;who had been missing from his home for several days;operated Harry’s Bar in Belle Vernon. Yoney said death was due to suffocation by drowning. Reportedly;Johnston’s car was found near the river earlier in the week. Workers at the Gibson yard recovered the body about 5 a.m. Mr.Johnston was born in New Eagle;May 25;1921 to Mr.and Mrs. Alex Johnston. He had been a resident of Belle Vernon six years. Prior to that he had resided in Fellsburg and Webster. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Belle Vernon. He was a veteran of World War II;and belonged to the Belle Vernon American Legion Post. He was also a member of the Hilltop Fireman’s Club;Monessen;and the East Belle Vernon Athletic Association. He is survived by his widow;Marjorie Rosborough Johnston;two sons;Thomas and Harry E.Johnston;Jr.;at home;three daughters;Mrs.William (Judith) Alund;McKeesport;Jeanne and Joy at home;two brothers;James of Monessen;George of Belle Vernon;R.D.1;one sister;Mrs.Furman Walters;LaGrange;Ill.;and one grandchild;Carol Lee Alund.
