A former director of raw materials for the then Pittsburgh Steel Co.;he was active in community affairs in Monessen;having been a director of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Monessen Public Library. He was a member of the Monessen Elks Lodge and the American Iron and Steel Institute. He had been in retirement since 1950. His wife;Mary C.Kitto;died Jan.20;1954. He is survived by one son;William C.Jr.of Belle Vernon;one sister;Mrs.John Hall of Roswell;N.M.;and one granddaughter;Carol L.Kitto of Belle Vernon. Richard Eugene Kostelac;19;of 222 Charles St.;Belle Vernon;died Wednesday;June 30;1971;at 7:50 while swimming in the Monongahela River. The youth failed to surface after plunging into the water from an 85-foot pier. His body was recovered about an hour later through the combined efforts of scuba divers and firemen from Belle Vernon;Fayette City and Greensburg. His body was found in 15 feet of water about 70 feet from shore by Darwin Bethem;scuba diver with the Belle Vernon Fire Department. State Police said Kostelac had been swimming with companions at the abandoned Colonial Docks located about 1.5 miles north of Newell in Jefferson Twp. Police said approximately 20 persons were in the swimming area when the fatal dive was made. The youth was born Feb.21;1952. He was employed as a millwright helper at the Allenport Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. He is survived by his parents;Joseph A.and Helen Diggins Kostelac;a brother;Joseph Jr.;at home;two sisters;Mrs.Richard (Bonnie) Wilson of Monessen and Mrs.Sheri Kulik of Belle Vernon;maternal grandmother;Mrs.Violet Brouse of Altoona;and step-grandfather;Judson Brouse.
