A 36-year-old man was burned to death and four other persons;including his parents;were either burned or injured when an early morning fire of unknown origin completely destroyed a two-story frame home at Perryopolis R.D.2 in Washington Twp. Dead is William Matthews;a Monessen native who was employed at the Allenport plant of Pittsburgh Steel Co. Mr.Matthews;who lived at the home of his parents;was sleeping on a sofa in the sunporch on the first floor and the others were in upstairs bedrooms of the eight-room house when the devastating fire struck about 1:30 a.m. His body could not be reached by the family because of roaring flames and the remains could not be recovered until after the five-hour fire was extinguished. Today was to have been a happy day for the household. Mr.Matthews and his fiance;Irene Padovani of Charleroi;were to look for a home prior to their intended marriage. He was a World War II veteran;serving in the U.S.Navy. Besides his parents;Mr.Matthews is survived by a sister;Mrs.Silvie (Cleo) Angeline;Monessen. Funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m.at the Howard W.McCrory Funeral Home in Fayette City. Burial will follow at Belle Vernon Cemetery. The destroyed home was located on the old Redstone Church Road near Duney’s farm. None of its contents was saved.

Philip B.Meli;25;of 2419 East 30th St.;Lorain;Ohio;formerly of Charleroi and Allenport;was dead on arrival at Elyria;(Ohio) Memorial Hospital on Saturday August 1;1964 at 9:05 p.m. after the car he was driving skidded out of control and crashed over a 40-foot embankment five miles west of Elyria;near Amherst. Born Dec.17;1938;in Charleroi;Meli resided in Allenport before moving to Lorain six years ago. He was the son of the late Philip Meli and Blanche Balmer Southwell;who arrived from the state of California this morning by plane. He is also survived by his wife;the former Mary Ellen Connor of Charleroi;a daughter;Tammi Ann;6 1/2;two sons;Philip;4 1/2;and Douglas;one year. Survivors also include two brothers;Thomas and Lawrence;who also live in the state of California;and a sister;Mrs.Audrey Ann Girardin;Charleroi R.D.1.
