Mr.Smith was a member of the Union Baptist Church;Monessen and was a trustee;treasurer of the Men’s Club;treasurer of the building fund and a member of the Usher Board of the church. He belonged to the Elks Okay Lodge 697 of Monessen;Joseph H.Ford Post 691 American Legion of Monessen and Twin City Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Pricedale. A retired coal miner;Mr.Smith was a member of the United Mine Workers of America District 5. He is survived by a son;Robert Smith of Indianapolis;Ind. Julius J.Stanko;44 year-old war veteran of Galltin;Forward Twp.;died instantly from a rifle wound in the head at his home on Monday afternoon;Sept.28;1959. Stanko;well-known in Charleroi and Monessen;was reported by authorities to have fired a .22 caliber bullet into his brain by holding the muzzle of the weapon in his mouth. Members of his family were absent from the home at the time. Mrs.Margaret Pascoe Stanko;wife of the victim;found his body in the residence when she returned home from a shopping trip about 1:45 p.m. No reason for the act could be given. He was born in Smithton;Nov.1;1915;the son of Mr.and Mrs.John Stanko;and was a veteran of World War II;Magic City Council;JOUAM;and was employed at Clairton Works;United States Steel Corp. Survivors include his wife;Margaret;his mother;Mrs.Mary Stanko;Europe;his father;John Stanko Sr.;Smithton;one brother;John Jr.of Youngstown;and a sister;Mrs.Olterige Marie Serra;Belle Vernon.
