Mr.Smith was a retired custodian;having worked at Mellon Bank in Charleroi. He was an Army veteran of World War I. Several nieces and nephews survive. Born in Helvetia;Clearfield County;on May 29;1905;he was a son of the late John and Elizabeth Toward Shaw. Mr.Shaw was a retired employee of Allenport Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.and belonged to the Washington Twp.Firemen’s Club and the Fairhope Rod and Gun Club. He is survived by his widow;Bertha;four sons;William of Millersville;Md.;John M.and George B.;both of Crofton;Md.;and James W.of New Carrolltown;Md.;two daughters;Mrs.Marion Tootsey of Silver Spring;Md.and Mrs.Patricia Maxwell of Adelphia;Md.;two sisters;Mrs.Isabelle Bayley of Pontiac;Mich.and Mrs.Janet Henderson of Detroit;Mich.;and eight grandchildren. Rudolph Schmidt;80;of 303 Main St.;Belle Vernon;died Tuesday;Dec.31;1974;at 10:30 p.m. in Charleroi Division of Mon Valley Hospital. He was born in Belle Vernon on Dec.22;1894;son of the late Rudolph and Maggie Durst Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon;the American Legion of Belle Vernon;East Belle Vernon Athletic Club and the Market St.Italian Beneficial Society. He was a veteran of World War I. He was retired from the former American Window Glass Co.of Belle Vernon. Surviving are his widow;Adelmini Riva Schmidt;two daughters;Mrs.Clarence (Shirley) Booth of Hampton;Va.;and Mrs.Alvin (Beverly) Dopler of Springfield;Va.;one brother;Robert Schmidt of Belle Vernon;seven grandchildren;and one great-grandchild.
