Episcopalian by faith; she was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of both the Belle Vernon American Legion and the Belle Vernon Fire Company. James C. Chinny Johnston; 93; of Speers Hill; passed away Monday; July 8; 2013; in Lafayette; La. A son of the late Robert and Isabell Carrick Johnston; he was born in Floreffe; Jan. 24; 1920. James was a member of the Pricedale Union Church; Russian Club of Charleroi and; during his years at the former Rostraver High School; was a star basketball player. He worked as a steel worker at the Allenport Plant of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel until his retirement in 1979. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Crowley during World War II; and was awarded six battle stars during his service. Jim was an avid gardener and was well known for his prized tomatoes. They took countless trips traveling throughout the United States; Canada and Mexico.
