Russell L.Wergin;46;of 24 Mulberry street;Belle Vernon;died Thursday;July 29;1954;of a heart attack while at Pittsburgh Steel Co.in Monessen. Mr.Wergin;a brakeman for the Monessen Southwestern Railroad;was reporting for work on the 7 a.m.-3 p.m.shift when he was stricken with his fatal attack shortly after 6:30 a.m. Company officials said that he collapsed and died outside the railroad round house at the East end of the Monessen plant. He had just been driven to work by his wife;Catherine. employed by the plant railroad since February;1948;Mr.Wergin was pronounced dead at the plant hospital by Dr.R.J.Herron. He is survived by his wife;Catherine Wergin;two daughters;Latricia and Linda;at home;one son;James;at home;four sisters;Mrs.Margaret Novak;of Youngstown;Ohio;Mrs.Joseph Reda;of Monessen;Mrs.Clarence Albright;of Belle Vernon;and Mrs.Earl Gosney;of Roscoe;four brothers;Edward and John;both of the state of Oklahoma;Carla and William;both of Youngstown;Ohio. Friends will be received at the Toner Funeral Home;North Belle Vernon;beginning July 30th. An employee of the Pittsburgh Steel Co.plant for the past 25 years;the deceased had served in World War II;and was a member of the American Legion;Joseph H.Ford Post. Surviving are three sisters;Mrs.Alma Miller;with whom he made his home;Mrs.Bridget Gamble;of Selma;Ala.;and Mrs.Sallie Wallace;Chatanooga;Tenn.;a son;M.Sgt.Clifford White;with the U.S.Marine Corps;stationed in Oceanside;Calif.;and four grandchildren. A 31-year-old member of a well-known Belle Vernon family was instantly killedMonday night;January 20;1954;when his car upset on Elrama road at Shire Oaks. Charles L.Wells;31;432 Graham St.;Belle Vernon;may have lost his life because of speed and the rutted condition of the berm along Route 837 at the point of the accident. Wells was driving south along the river route at 8:30 p.m. At a grade directly opposite the Pennsylvania Railroad Co.yards;the wheels of the car left the concrete;according to Police Chief George Nagy of Union township. The machine plunged headlong across the highway;ripped out four guard-posts;bounced back on the road;upset twice;then ended up against guard rails on the west side of the highway. Wells’body was hurled thru the rear window of the 1951 sedan. Charles Wells was born at Fairhope;Oct.24;1922;the son of Mr.and Mrs.Steward Wells;now of Belle Vernon. He is survived by his wife;Lila Heino Wells;his parents;one brother;Curtis of Belle Vernon and two sisters;Mrs.William Palfrey of Belle Vernon and Mrs.Samuel Stedman of Speers. A World War Veteran;Wells was a member of the American Legion and the First Christian Church. He was employed by Monessen Southwestern Railways Co.;a Pittsburgh Steel Co.Subsidiary. Military services will be held for the deceased on Saturday. Friends will be received at the Melenyzer Funeral home;Belle vernon. Services will be held there Saturday;January 23;1954;at 3:30 p.m.;in charge of Rev.John Bowers.
