Leighty Steen;senior member of Leighty Steen & Son of Belle Vernon;and one of the best known men of the Monongahela Valley;died suddenly Friday morning;Dec.28;1917;at 7:15 o’clock at his home from heart failure. Mr.Steen had arisen about 5 o’clock and went to the cellar to fix the furnace. Coming upstairs he called to his wife;and to her he complained of a severe pain about his heart. Goint upstairs again he undressed and went to bed. His condition suddenly became very critical and at 7:15 he passed away. The immediate cause of his death is said to have been acute indigestion coupled with heart trouble. Mr.Steen was engaged in the real estate and insurance business in which he had a large measure of success. He began life as a school teacher and for 20 years followed this profession;giving it up to enter the business in which he was engaged at the time of his death. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Belle Vernon and was active in Sunday school work;serving as District Superintendent of the Fayette County Association. He was active in the civic affairs of his home community;but outside of some minor borough offices;never aspired to political perfecment. He was a member of the Belle Vernon Lodge of Odd Fellows;this being the only secret society with which he was associated. Deceased;who had spent his entire life in that vicinity;was a native of Westmoreland County;where he served as a school teacher for 20 years;at one time being president of the Westmoreland County Directors’ association. He was also asociated both as an active worker and an officer with the Fayette County Sabbath School association and was well-known in both counties. Mr.Steen was born May 7;1853;and was in his 65th year. He married Martha Ann Beeler on Sept.8;1878. Surviving him are his wife and three children;Frank H.of Belle Vernon;Harriet;wife of E.C.Phillips of Belle Vernon;and Earl Steen of New Castle;five grandchildren;one sister and one brother. Funeral services will be held Monday;Dec.31;1917.
