On Thursday, August 24, 2023, Lois Jean Tiernan Varga peacefully passed away at the age of 93. Beloved wife of the late Arthur B. Varga, M.D. for 55 years. Survived by sons Jeffrey M. Varga, M.D. (wife Susan) and Michael J. Varga (Michele Pompa). Grandmother of Jessica Lauren Varga, D.O. (husband Robert Lopez), Jeffrey Alan Varga (wife Sarah Fletcher Varga) and Nicholas Pompa (Hannah Ogden). Great grandmother of Theodore and Eleanor Lopez, Naomi Varga and Camille and Adrianna Pompa. She is also survived by niece Valerie Kelsey. She was predeceased in death by father, James Tiernan, mother, Ruth Leithold Tiernan Horning and siblings Shirley Staranko and Wayne Tiernan. Lois lived most of her life in the Mon Valley (Belle Vernon area), graduating from Marion High School in 1947. She achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse, graduating from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. While working at Charleroi Monessen Hospital, she met Arthur, whom she married on June 14,1950, one week after he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After residency at Allegheny General Hospital, they went back to Charleroi Monessen Hospital, eventually moving to Uniontown where they lived for 26 years. Lois was active at Uniontown Hospital where she volunteered and served on the Hospital Auxiliary Board. She also served on the Laurel Highlands School District School Board for 13 years and the Intermediate Unit #1 board. Lois was a former member of St. Therese Parish in Uniontown where she participated in the Altar Society, Parish Council, and taught CCD classes. She was an active member of the Mon Valley Golden Panthers for years, traveling to both home and away football games. She was honored as Pitt Golden Panther of the Year for the Mon Valley Chapter in 1996. Lois and Arthur moved to Monroeville in 1991 to be closer to their grandchildren, living here for 32 years. Family and friends will be received on Monday August 28, 2023, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the GENE H. CORL FUNERAL CHAPEL INC. AND CREMATION SERVICES OF MONROEVILLE, 4335 Northern Pike (412-372-2100). Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish at St. Susanna Church, 200 Stotler Road, Penn Hills. Entombment will be private.
