Obituary

Death on Friday, March 5,1931 removed the last surviving charter member of the General George D. Bayard Post 178,Grand Army of the Republic,when Windfield Scott Harvey passed to the Great Beyond. This veteran of the Civil War and also of the frontier wars with the Indians was 82 years of age last October and spent practically all of his life in this district. When not yet 16 years of age,he enlisted in Company E. 57th Pennsylvania Infantry and served throuthout the Civil War, participating in a number of the major engagements. Following the war he enlisted in Troop K 7th U.S.Cavalry and fought with General Custer in halting the Indian uprising. Returning to Belle Vernon he was married to Miss Eliza Corwin but their married life was short lived,the passing away a year and a half after the wedding.  Later he was joined in the Holy bond of matrimony with Annastasia Beazell of Belle Vernon and they lived happily together until the death angel called Mrs.Harvey in 1927. Four children survive this union,Charles M. Harvey of Belle Vernon R.D.2, William R.Harvey of Belle Vernon, Mrs. John E. Coughenour of Belle Vernon and Mrs. Esther Wilson of Donora,also 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren,five sisters and two brothers also survive. The deceased was a glass worker by trade and remained active until 1921,but it was not until the past 3 months that he had been confined to his room and his death expected. He passed away at 11:35 Thursday morning March 5,1931 at his home at 210 Third street, Belle Vernon. He was active in politics and in addition to serving for years as a member of the Belle Vernon borough council,he also served two terms as Burgess.  He was Commander of the General George D. Bayard Post, 178,of the G.A.R.,which was organized in 1888 and was the only surviving charter member-in fact there is but one surviving member, W.S.Cooper, in the organiztion. He was also a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of Belle Vernon.Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the late home with interment in Belle Vernon Cemetery.  A military funeral will be given in charge of the Belle Vernon Post of the American Legion,while the Sons of Union Veterans will also hold services at the grave.
