Obituary

Willie James Newberry, 86, of Belle Vernon, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, in Mon Valley Hospital. Born to the late David J. Matthews and Estella Worsham Matthews, she has resided in the Mon Valley most of her life. Mrs. Newberry was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Belle Vernon, where she served on the Missionary board. She cooked for the homeless many years and was co-owner of a restaurant in Monessen called Old New York . Mrs. Newberry also belonged to the YWBA Association for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Newberry, one son, Hiawatha Frezzell, and three sisters and two brothers. William James leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Asenath A. Love, of Mt. Clemens, Mich., and Jannie M. Scott, of Detroit, Mich., one sister, Jannie M. Moore, of Columbus, Ohio, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be held Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, Henry Street, Belle Vernon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Clifford Carter, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the WILLIAM R. TAYLOR FUNERAL HOME, 645 McMahon Ave., Monessen (724-684-4877), Trudy Taylor-Bristol, director.
