Obituary

William L. Leithold, 76, of Henry Street, Belle Vernon, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2002, after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul, his mother, Ella Chambers Leithold, two brothers, Wilbur and Fred, and two sisters, Dorothy Leithold and Ruth Tiernan Horning. Mr. Leithold was the last surviving member of his family. He was born May 21, 1926, graduated from Marion High School in 1944, and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for two years. Mr. Leithold was retired from the Allenport plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Co. He is survived by three nieces, Lois Jean Tiernan Varga of Monroeville, Shirley Staranko of Palmdale, Calif., and Janice Heiner of Butler, two nephews, James Leithold of Ocala, Fla., and Wayne Tiernan of Roseville, Calif., two great-nieces, Valerie Kelsey of Clovis, Calif., and Geri Lynn Sande of Eugene, Ore., three great-nephews, Jeffrey Heiner of Arizona, Michael J. Varga of Ocean City, Md., and Jeffrey M. Varga, M.D., of Monroeville. Mr. Leithold was an avid sports fan and fund-raiser. He loved the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pitt Panthers, and the Belle Vernon Leopards. He lived for the University of Pittsburgh football and basketball teams, having been a fan for over 50 years. His football seat was in section 9 of the end zone. He traveled all over the country to see them play, never missing a game. On April 27, 2002, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mon Valley Chapter Team Pittsburgh, an organization of which he was one of the founders. He also was very much involved with the Belle Vernon Leopards football program, always raising funds for their benefit. Mr. Leithold was an asset to the Belle Vernon community, always putting everyone else first. He was a member of F&AM Lodge 643 of Belle Vernon, American Legion Post 659, Charleroi VFW Post 167, a member and past president of the Belle Vernon Lions Club, the Belle Vernon Booster Club, and the Belle Vernon Area Quarterback Club, from which the Belle Vernon Hall of Fame was instituted and where he served as treasurer and was an honorary inductee. Friends will be received in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC., a Golden Rule Member Firm, 700 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Saturday, May 25, at noon with the Rev. William Lawson, pastor of Marion Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The following organizations will meet in the funeral home to hold services: Belle Vernon American Legion, Friday at 7 p.m., F&AM Lodge, Belle Vernon, Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Charleroi VFW, Friday at 7:45 p.m.
