Obituary

The last body of an overseas veteran, who paid the supreme sacrifice in the World War, was laid to rest Sunday afternoon,April 23,1922, at Belle Vernon.  The remains were those of Wm. Doyle who was fatally wounded in the Argonne drive on September 13, 1918.  The body arrived in Belle Vernon Friday and the American Legion of this city was requested to give the dead hero a military funeral. Twenty-five members of the local Post attended services in a body and a like number were present from Belle Vernon. The little town was decorated with American flags by the residents, who in this way, honored the hero.  The draped National colors could be seen displayed from practically every home and reflected greatly upon the spirit of the citizens of that community. In addition to the soldiers who escorted the body on the caisson, the Mothers of Democracy and also the Boy Scouts marched to the cemetery.
Fully 590 people were congregated about the grave.
