A family picnic at Layton reservoir, near Perryopolis,ended in tragedy Thursday night, July 10,1941 when a member of the party, William C. Kyle,49,of 1113 Schoonmaker avenue,drowned while swimming in the artificial lake. It was the Monongahela Valley's first drowning of the season. Mr. Kyle's body, according to the Westmoreland County coroner's report, was found in one foot of water by John Cooper,of Belle Vernon, a member of the party. Mr. Kyle was believed to have been stricken with a heart attack after he entered the water. Mr. Kyle, his wife,and Mr.and Mrs. Cooper and several other persons had just finished eating their picnic lunch when they decided to "take a swim",it was reported. Mr. Cooper stated that the group was swimming from one end of the bank to the other and that Mr. Kyle was behind the others. Mr. Cooper said he looked back once and saw Mr. Kyle swimmming with the group and that when he looked back a few minutes later Mr. Kyle was missing. Mr. Cooper and the rest of the group,according to reports,left the water and immediately began a serach. A car spotlight located Mr. Kyles' body in one foot of water a few feet from shore.Mr. Kyle had been a resident of Monessen for the past 22 years. Mr. Kyle,who was a charging machine operater in the open hearth department of the Pittsburgh Steel Co. plant here, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Flora Kyle and five children, Mrs. Mildred Bachetti of Ridge Road,Belle Vernon,Clyde of 359 Parkway, Monessen, Robert in camp at Ft. Meade, Md. and Doris and Warren,at home. His mother and grandmother,five brothers, four sisters and two grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Woodward Home for Funerals. Services will be in charge of Rev. C.G. White,pastor of the United Brethern Church. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
