Obituary

Walter J. Plewniak, 89, of Belle Vernon, Fairhope, died Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 2:08 a.m., at his home. Born Feb. 1, 1922, in Dillonsville, Ohio, he was a son of the late Joseph and Katerine Plewniak. A lifelong resident of Belle Vernon, Mr. Plewniak was a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church, Belle Vernon, and was a retired coal miner from Banning No. 4 Mine, West Newton. In his youth, he played baseball for the Fayette City Legion and was later inducted into the Fayette County Baseball Hall of Fame. Walter was a World War II veteran, having served in the Army, and received the following citations: the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Presidential Citation, the Silver Star for gallantry with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantry Badge and ribbons for five major campaigns. Walter was also an avid Penn State fan. He is survived by his wife, Mary Perney Spiker Plewniak, to whom he was married 20 years, two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Sherry Plewniak, of Perryopolis, and Elmer Spiker Jr. and wife, Becky, of Fairhope, three daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Bill Cole, of Rolling Prairie Hills, Ind., Diane and Rick Johnston, of Fayette City, and Debbie and TJ Tunney, of Belle Vernon, 12 grandchildren, Amber and Bob Biddle, Katie Gill, Jodee and Mike Faryna, Jeremy and Kristen Ortolona, Carlee and Bob Hovanec, Jacob and Mindy Ortolona, Darcy and Jeff Fearer, John Yetsconish, Jim Reed, Emalee Tunney, Mollee Tunney and Elmer C. Spiker III, seven great-grandchildren, Declan Biddle, Falon Faryna, Quinn Faryna, Ezra Faryna, Ben Fearer, Rex Hovanec and Enzo Ortolona, sister, Jean Pawlak, stepsister, Jennie Harold, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and his constant companion, Sparky. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Stella Barnot Plewniak, his first wife, Josephine Barnot Plewniak, daughter, Annie Gill, brother, Stanley Plewniak, and a sister, Lena Pawlak. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the LEONARD J. PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, 724-929-6183. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Monsignor Roger A. Statnick, pastor of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Members of St. Sebastian parish will pray the rosary at 3 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
