Obituary

Virginia (Eugenia) Gialas of 736 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,died Friday,Oct.2,1987,at 8:45 a.m. She was 100. Mrs.Giala wa born March 10,1887,in Mesta,Chios,Greece,a daughter of the late Andrea and Calliope Roumbakin Patricousis. She was the oldest living member of St.Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Monessen. Her husband,James Isederis Gialas,who died Oct.9,1973,was one of the founding pioneers of St.Spyridon Church. Mrs.Gialas had been a resident of Stockdale from 1920 until moving to Belle Vernon in 1952. In addition to her husband and her parents,she was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Survivors include one son,George Gialas of Cornwell Heights,four daughters,Mrs.Steve (Mary) Salidis of Springfield,Irene Retos,widow of Dr.George Retos,of Washington,Pa.,Dr.Angeline Gialas of Lake Wales,Fla.,and Caroline Gialas at home,five grandchildren,George Jr.,Gregory,Gary and Karen Retos,all of Washington and Victoria Gialas of Cornwell Heights,three great-grandchildren,Brandon,Nicholas and Kassandra Retos and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.and Sunday from noon to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.in the Shelby D.Ferguson Funeral Home,700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,where a prayer service will be held Monday,Oct.5,at 10:15 a.m.,followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.in St.Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church,Monessen,with the Rev.Nicholas Moskovites,pastor,officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Trisagion service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m.in the funeral home. Shelby D.Ferguson,funeral director,is in charge of arrangements.
