Obituary

Valley A. Val Zdilla, 77, of Rostraver Township, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, in his home. He was born in Monessen on Jan. 15, 1925, a son of the late George and Anna Antolik Zdilla. Val was a graduate of Monessen High School with the Class of 1943 and was retired from the Allenport plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. Mr. Zdilla was a veteran of World War II, having served the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles and as a paratrooper who jumped in Normandy on D-Day. He re-enlisted in the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. Mr. Zdilla was a proud member of the Church of St. Anne in Rostraver Township, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He also was a member of the Belle Vernon American Legion, the Belle Vernon VFW, and the Ukrainian Club of Monessen. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Louise Essey Zdilla, one daughter, Adrienne Kostal of Rostraver Township, one son, Rev. Valentine Zdilla of Santa Clarita, Calif., one granddaughter, Desiree Kostal of Austell, Ga., one brother and sister-in-law, John and Natalie Zdilla of Monessen, one sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Louis Berard of Pittsburgh, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Zdilla was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Zdilla. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. in the JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Sweeney Plan/Rostraver Township. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in the Church of St. Anne with his son, Rev. Valentine Zdilla, officiating. Interment with full Military Honors will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery, Rostraver Township. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Church of St. Anne, 1870 Rostraver Road, Belle Vernon, Pa. 15012.
