Thomas A. Brown; 80; of Speers Hill; died Tuesday; Nov. 27; 2001; in his home. A son of the late Thomas and Sophia B. Nicholson Brown; he was born Nov. 14; 1921; in Belleville; Ill. He was a member of the Speers United Methodist Church where he was the church historian; head usher and chairman of the trustees. Mr. Brown was also a member of the Charleroi Legion Post 22 and the National VFW Post 15040. A former Allenport councilman; he was active in the 8th Air Force Historical Society and the 8th Air Force Western Pennsylvania Wing. A former scoutmaster; he was a committee chairman for the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Brown attended Charleroi schools and graduated from the Pittsburgh Art Institute. He retired in 1983 from the Monessen plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp; where he was a turn foreman and was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corp; serving with the 339th Fighter Group and as the base photographer. Survivors include his wife of 53 years; Edith M. Bilton Brown; a daughter and son-in-law; Janet Lyn and Kenneth B. Vandermer of Irwin; two sons and daughters-in-law; Thomas Royce and Cheryl Brown of Tampa; Fla.; Robert Franklin and Sandra Brown of Harrisburg; N.C.; six grandchildren; Molly Detwiler and her husband Cris; Christopher Brown and his wife Brenda; Kevin Vandermer and his wife Amy; Jill Palmer and her husband the Rev. Kevin Palmer; David Brown and Jenny Lynn Brown; two great-grandchildren; Mason Vandermer and Erin Brown; and a sister-in-law; Lilian Richardson and her husband Lewis of England; a brother-in-law; Norman Bilton and his wife Doreen; also of England; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by two sisters; Sophia Deutsch and Hannah Cartmel. Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC.; a Golden Rule Member Firm; 700 Broad Ave.; Belle Vernon; where funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff St. Clair officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. If friends wish; memorial contributions may be made to the Speers United Methodist Church or the Boy Scouts of America.
