Obituary

Thomas A. Brown, 80, of Speers Hill, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, in his home. A son of the late Thomas and Sophia B. Nicholson Brown, he was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Belleville, Ill. He was a member of the Speers United Methodist Church where he was the church historian, head usher and chairman of the trustees. Mr. Brown was also a member of the Charleroi Legion Post 22 and the National VFW Post 15040. A former Allenport councilman, he was active in the 8th Air Force Historical Society and the 8th Air Force Western Pennsylvania Wing. A former scoutmaster, he was a committee chairman for the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Brown attended Charleroi schools and graduated from the Pittsburgh Art Institute. He retired in 1983 from the Monessen plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp, where he was a turn foreman and was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corp, serving with the 339th Fighter Group and as the base photographer. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Edith M. Bilton Brown, a daughter and son-in-law, Janet Lyn and Kenneth B. Vandermer of Irwin, two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Royce and Cheryl Brown of Tampa, Fla., Robert Franklin and Sandra Brown of Harrisburg, N.C., six grandchildren, Molly Detwiler and her husband Cris, Christopher Brown and his wife Brenda, Kevin Vandermer and his wife Amy, Jill Palmer and her husband the Rev. Kevin Palmer, David Brown and Jenny Lynn Brown, two great-grandchildren, Mason Vandermer and Erin Brown, and a sister-in-law, Lilian Richardson and her husband Lewis of England, a brother-in-law, Norman Bilton and his wife Doreen, also of England, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Sophia Deutsch and Hannah Cartmel. Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC., a Golden Rule Member Firm, 700 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, where funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff St. Clair officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. If friends wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Speers United Methodist Church or the Boy Scouts of America.
