Obituary

Thelma Wanko, 84, formerly of Belle Vernon (Washington Township), died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005, in the Charles County Nursing Center, La Plata, Md. A daughter of the late Emil and Elizabeth Michaelson Koppala, she was born in Weirton, W.Va., on Dec. 30, 1920. Mrs. Wanko was a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in Belle Vernon. Survivors include one daughter, Leslie L. Wanko, of La Plata, three sons and daughters-in-law, James K. and Diane Wanko, of Waldorf, Md., Richard W. and Nancy Wanko, of La Plata, and Douglas L. and Gina Wanko, of Lilburn, Ga., and three grandchildren, David, Tracy and Shannon Wanko. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Wanko, on Feb. 3, 1992. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC. and CREMATION SERVICE, a Golden Rule Member Firm, 724-929-5300, 700 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon. A blessing service will be in the funeral home Friday, Sept. 16, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Sebastian R.C. Church with Father Chuck Esposito, parochial vicar, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed in the funeral home on Thursday at 3 p.m., led by members of St. Sebastian Parish.
