Obituary

S. Joseph Amato, 85, of Belle Vernon, formerly of Levittown, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, in Havencrest Nursing Center. A son of the late Joseph and Mary Edwards Amato, he was born in Belle Vernon on Nov. 12, 1925. He was Methodist by faith and was a member of Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659. Prior to retirement in 1986, he had been employed at U.S. Steel Fairless Hills Plant. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and Air Force. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ruth Read Amato, a brother, Lloyd Amato and wife, Cleo, of Belle Vernon, a sister, Sarafene Huscroft and husband, Norman, of Belle Vernon, a sister-in-law, Laura Byers and husband, Ray, of Rostraver, two brothers-in-law, Bill Read and wife, Laura, of Columbus, Ohio, and Gary Treibsch, of Mt. Lebanon. He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Sandy Read Treibsch, in 2010. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, INC., 700 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, (724) 929-5300, www.fergusonfuneralhomeandcrematory.com. Funeral services will be in the funeral home Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. David Zona officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. American Legion Post 659 will hold services Friday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
