Obituary

A mysterious murder came to light Friday morning,April 22,1921,when the body of Russell Fields, better known as "Jack" was found in a field about a mile east of Monessen.  The body of the man was found on the farm of Jacob Symonds,on the Pricedle road, about 25 feet from the highway.  An examination showed that the man had been shot throught the heart.  The body was brought to Monessen and taken to the morgue of John Check, where is was later identified by a relative as that of Russell Field.  When found the body was lying face up in the field, and within a short distance was found a full-loaded colt revolver.  A shell from an automatic revolver was also found, and it is supposed it was from the gun which fired the fatal bullet.  The loaded gun belonged to Mr. Fields.  The deceased was formerly employed by the Monongahela Railway as a detective and worked out of Brownsville.  He was laid off some time ago since which time he had been staying around Monessen.  It is alleged that he had been connected with a gang at that place which did not bear a very good reputation.  The last seen of Fields was Thursday evening, when he left a Monessen restaurant in company with several members of the supposed gang.Fields was about 28 years of age and came to this district from Cleveland, Ohio. A queer coincidence in connection with the murder is the fact that his wife, Sadie Plummer Fields, died from a bullet wound at Fayette City about four years ago. It was the supposition then that she had committed suicide, but some facts that have lately been learned, and that the husband met a similar fate, leads the authoriies to believe that she also was murdered.
