Ruby Owen Cocain,active for many years in civic and service organizations in the Belle Vernon area, died at her home, 625 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,at 2:05 p.m. on Wednesday,May 11,1977. Mrs. Cocain came to the Belle Vernon area 40 years ago. She had been a former school teacher in Ohio. She was active in the Girl Scout movement and was instrumental in acquiring the building known as the Girl Scout Little House of the Belle Vernon Area. She was a past president,charter member and honorary member of the Belle Vernon Library Association and had been president for two terms,charter member and honorary member of the Belle Vernon Woman's Club. Mrs. Cocain was also a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Charleroi Division of Mon Valley Hospital and member of the Belle Vernon area Community Foundation. She served on many Red Cross and American Cancer Society drives. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Belle Vernon and the Martha Circle of the church. She was also a life member of the Erie Chapter of the Eastern Star of Ashtabula,Ohio. Born in Ashtabula,Ohio on Jan. 15,1896,she was a daughter of the late Harland Paige and Pearl Andrus Jeffers. She was preceded in death by her husband,John E. Owen,on July 2,1956 and by her second husband,Edgar H. Cocain on Oct. 17,1965. Surviving are one stepson,Thomas E. Cocain of Belle Vernon, four nieces, Barbara Kotila of Ashtabula, Ohio,Carol Borelli of Columbus, Ohio,Joan Bartlow of Sylvania, Ohio and Betty Kinsey of Belle Vernon, and one nephew, James Jeffers of Massillon, Ohio. Friends will be received at the Shelby D. Ferguson Funeral Home,Belle Vernon, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Pastor R. Dawson Hopson of the First United Methodist Church,Belle Vernon, officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Shelby D Ferguson is funeral director in charge.
