Obituary

Roy I. Horrell, 74, of Belle Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, in his home. A son of the late James and Charlotte Forsythe Horrell, he was born in Rostraver Township on Jan. 19, 1935. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon, a 35-year member, past four-term President and a Melvin Jones Award recipient of the Belle Vernon Lions Club and had served as a paramedic for the former Community Ambulance Service. He was also a past master of the former F&AM Lodge 643 of Belle Vernon and was a current member of the Tri County Lodge 252 of Donora, the Lodge of Perfection, Consistory, Valley of Pittsburgh, Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659 and the VFW Post 699. Roy enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren in the mountains and on his boat at Yough Lake. He served as a Cub Scout Master in the 1960's, and later retired from the former Monessen Southwestern Railroad after 30 years as a conductor and had been self-employed as an excavating contractor. He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Des Moines where he was a signalman. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Doris Turek Horrell, two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy W. and Judy Horrell, of Belle Vernon, and Ted and Cis Horrell, of Fayette City, one daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Ken Prunty, of Monongahela, one brother, William Horrell, of Belle Vernon, one sister, Eleanor Anderson, of Jensen Beach, Fla., 11 grandchildren, Brandon Horrell, Alison Ducoli and husband Jon, Aimee Gillingham and husband Josh, Jeff, Kari, Jared and Josh Horrell, Brian Prunty, Garrett Horrell, Patrick Prunty and Jillian Horrell, and four great-grandchildren, Nina, Mia and Alexa Gillingham and Paige Ducoli. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Horrell, in 1976. Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 700 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon, 724-929-5300, www.fergusonfuneralhomeandcrematory.com. Funeral services will be in the First Presbyterian Church, 501 Fayette Street, Belle Vernon, Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Klein officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The officers and members of the First Presbyterian Church will meet in the funeral home to hold services Wednesday at 7 p.m., and on Thursday, both the American Legion and VFW will hold services in the funeral home at 7 p.m. followed immediately by services by the Belle Vernon Lions Club.
