Obituary

Roco Spina, aged 19,while bathing, was drowned in the Monongahela river at Belle Vernon,Monday afternoon,June 8,1914 at 12:15 o'clock.  He leaves his father, Frank Spina and two little sisters and a small brother. He was employed as a snaper in the American Window Glass factory No. 4,at Belle Vernon.  He worked the night shift from 4 to 12 o'clock;coming from work at midnight Sunday night.  Monday morning it was so warm that he decided to take a swim. The young man was in a skiff for a time.  He dived out of the boat, and the wind blew it away from him starting to swim for the shore, about 50 yards away, something seemed to go wrong.  He called twice for help but sank before assistance could reach him in about 20 feet of water. The place where he went down was just below the glass factory and a number of men saw the young man go down.  Some of them attempted to go out with a boat but the boat was locked and before they could get it loose he had gone down. Searchers raked the river for the body until a late hour Monday night.  The search was resumed Tuesday morning.  Dynamite was used Monday evening in an attempt to make the body raise to the top of the water. His body was found on Tuesday morning at 10:55. He was removed to the Reppert morgue and prepared for burial.  The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon,June 10,at 4 o'clock.
