Obituary

Robert M. Johnston, 81, of 922 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at 4:07 p.m. at his home. Born March 13, 1916, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Michael and Galeen Boyce Johnston. Mr. Johnston was a lifelong resident of the Belle Vernon community, where he was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon and its Adult Sunday School class. He retired as a motor inspector at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel's Allenport plant. Mr. Johnston was a 50-year member of Belle Vernon Masonic Lodge 643 F&AM,Uniontown Lodge of Perfection,Pittsburgh Consistory,life member of Syria Temple,Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 209 of Belle Vernon and a social member of the Belle Vernon Legion Club. He was also a charter member of the Belle Vernon Lions Club,where he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow. Survivors include his wife,Myrtle Sanderson Johnston,with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage this past April,two daughters,Mrs.Fred (Linda) Aten of Belle Vernon and Nancy Johnston of Youngwood,two grandchildren,Susan Aten of Belle Vernon and Robert Aten of Pittsburgh,one great-granddaughter,Olivia Aten,and two brothers,Melvin Johnston of Gibsonia and Gale Johnston of Monessen. In addition to his parents,he was preceded in death by a sister,Dora Metzner,and a brother,Thomas Johnston. Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.in the Leonard J. Parzynski Funeral Home,626 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon. Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m.in the funeral home,with Rev.James C.Ramsey,pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon,officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Belle Vernon Masonic Lodge 643 F&QM will hold services in the funeral home Thursday at 7 p.m. The Belle Vernon Lions Club will pay respects at the funeral home Thursday at 8 p.m. The Leonard J. Parzynski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
