Obituary

Robert C. Rab Hughes, 91, of Rostraver Township, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, in the Harmon House, Mt. Pleasant. Born in Dunbar on July 8, 1915, he was the son of the late Charles and Ida Bryner Hughes. Rab was the youngest of 10 children. As a young man, he was competitive in football and basketball at Donora High School, where he played halfback for the legendary Jimmy Russell in 1934. He worked at U.S. Steel, Donora Works for 32 years and then at Westinghouse at Waltz Mills in Madison for 15 years. He had a vivid memory and loved to talk about football and his family ancestry. He is survived by two sons, Joseph Hughes, of Elkins, W.Va., and James Hughes and wife Sheila, of New Stanton, a daughter, Ellen Mackey and husband Bill, of Scottdale, one sister, Mildred Gibson, 94, of Rostraver Township, 10 grandchildren, Tammy, Amy, Chris, John, April, Jessie, Michael, Matthew, Chelsey and Angelo, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae Zollars, in 1997, a daughter, Nancy, in 1973, and a son, Richard, in 1999. The family will receive friends for a memorial gathering on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 8 p.m. in the JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Belle Vernon/Rostraver Township (724-929-7934), www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or Excela Hospice-Westmoreland.
