Obituary

Robert Matson of 433 Rostraver Road,Belle Vernon,died Monday,March 17,1986,at 1:33 p.m. in Monongahela Valley Hospital,Carroll Twp.,following a brief illness. Mr.Matson was 60. He was born April 17,1925,in Charleroi,a son of the late Bert G.and Violet Fleming Matson Sr. Before retiring,he was employed by the River Transportation Division of U.S.Steel Corp. Mr.Matson was a U.S.Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of Brightwell-Daugherty Post 484 of The American Legion in Fayette City. He was a Protestant by faith,and also was a member of the Fairhope Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of the Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Association and Fayette County Firemen's Association and he had been a member of the Washington Twp.Fire Company for 19 years,having served as its president for a period of time. Mr.Matson also was active with the Washington Twp-Fayette City Community Ambulance Service since its inception in 1978. A spokesman for CAS called him the ultimate volunteer . Mr Matson held virtually every office in CAS and was recognized as being most instrumental in its growth. As an Emergency Medical Technician,his positions included vice president,assistant chief,equipment manager,transfer manager,and uniform committee chairman. Mr Matson was a member of the CAS board of directors for six years. He also oversaw construction of the CAS operations building in 1981,built many facilities himself,raised considerable funds for the ambulance service,drove on hundreds of ambulance trips,and played a large part in practically every function of the all-volunteer organization,the CAS spokesman noted. He was affectionately known to CAS members as Pap and Uncle Bob . Cas President Dick BLack and Joe Grata,CAS president from its 1978 founding through 1982,who worked closely with Mt.Matson,issued the following statement on his death: CAS deeply mourns the loss of a friend and co-worker,Mr.Robert Matson,who was an inspiration to us all with his dedication,determination and unselfishness. He literally gave his life to save other lives. CAS was,indeed,his second home and second family. His mark on the community,and the ambulance service is an incredible one. someone once asked how many hours Mr.Matson volunteered at CAS. The answer was easy,more than 24 hours a day. Mr.Matson continued his work at CAS undeterred by his own medical history because his spiritual heart was bigger and stronger than the one that cost his life . CAS will post an honor guard at the casket at the McCrory Funeral Home in Fayette City during visitations today and tomorrow as a tribute to his memory, Black and Grata stated. Cas No.2,the ambulance in which Mr.Matson did much of his work,will serve as his hearse at Thursday's burial,they added. In addition to his parents,Mr.Matson was preceded in death by a brother,Dayton Fleming. He is survived by his widow,Donna June Ramsey Matson ,two sons,Barry Robert Matson at home and Richard L.Matson of Belle Vernon,a daughter,Mrs.Kevin(Marilyn) Caramela of Harwood,Md.,four grandchildren,Erini and Eric Matson and Autumn and Ashley Caramela,four brothers,Berl E.Matson and Clarence Matson,both of Charleroi.and James Earl Matson of Belle Vernon and Ralph Matson of Monongahela R.D.,and a sister,Mrs.Ted (Ruth) Haluschak of North Charleroi. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Howard W.McCrory Funeral Home in Fayette City and Thursday until 11 a.m.,the time of services in the funeral home,with the Rev.Mary Howard,pastor of Marion United Presbyterian Church of Fairhope,Belle Vernon,officiating. The family requests that memorial contributions in Mr.Matson's name be made to the Washingtron Twp.-Fayette City Community Ambulance Service,1392 Fayette St.,Belle Vernon 15012. The Howard W.McCroy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
