Age 77; of Belle Vernon; passed away Friday; October 5; 2012 with his loving family by his side. A son of the late Richard V. and Alverta Nelson Fields; he was born October 8; 1934. Besides his parents; he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Joann Fields on May 2; 2012; his son Dickie Fields; grandson; Jasen Winget; sister and brother-in-law; Lois VonBergen and her husband Kenny; sister-in-law; Adele Punky Nelson; and brother-in-law Charles Buzzy Vaccaro. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law; Jodie and Jim Winget of Greer; SC; sons and daughter-in-law; Mike Fields of Belle Vernon and David and Vonda Fields; of Orlando; FL; six grandchildren; Jarret Winget; Autumn; Austin; Garret; Connor; and Morgan Fields; his sisters-in-law Cathi (Marshall) Carpenter and My-Hoa Vaccaro; and brother-in-law Arnold Nelson; nephews; Kenny (Pam) VonBergen; Brian (Katie) VonBergen; David (Lorie) Nelson; Peter Vaccaro and Kevin Carpenter; nieces; Lori VonBergen; Barb (Tim) Mayer; Patti (Mike) Seacrist; Linh Vaccaro and Kerri Carpenter; as well as numerous great nieces; nephews and cousins. After a year at St. Xavier College; he served in the 82nd Airborne of the US Army. He was a graduate of California University of PA where he was a co-captain of the 1961 championship football team. He was employed as a teacher in the Belle Vernon Area School District; and a well known football coach in the Mon Valley for many years. He was 1985 Coach of the Year for the Big 10 Conference. He was inducted into the California University of PA Football Hall of Fame; Mon Valley Hall of Fame; and Belle Vernon Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge; and an active member and past deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon. Friends will be received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the Ferguson Funeral Home and Crematory; Inc.; 700 Broad Avenue; Belle Vernon. The officers and members of the First Presbyterian Church will meet in the funeral home Monday at 7 P.M. to hold services.
