Richard A. Kurnik, 76, of North Belle Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. A son of the late Andrew and Hazel Smaroff Kurnik, he was born Sept. 7, 1939, in Ellsworth. Protestant by faith, he has resided in North Belle Vernon since 1975, served in the U.S. Army, and retired from Canon-McMillan High School as a health and physical education teacher in 1999. Richard enjoyed working out at the YMCA and taking his beloved dogs, Cassy and Foster, to Cedar Creek Park. He lovingly left behind his wife of 41 years, Lena Valdiserri Kurnik; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy (George) Kramer of Alexandria, Va., Diana (Jeff) Grimmer of Fairfax, Va., and Amy (Michael) Winn of Perryopolis; one sister, Marsha Massack of Sterling, Va.; and two grandsons, Eric and Alex Kramer.
