Obituary

Peter P. Honchalk Jr., 94, of Belle Vernon, Rostraver Township, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at 11:48 a.m. at Excela Health, Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. Born July 12, 1916, in Belle Vernon, he was the son of the late Peter Sr. and Mary Furtak Honchalk. A lifelong resident of Belle Vernon, Mr. Honchalk was a member of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, Belle Vernon, where he and his wife Peggy were founding members. Mr. Honchalk and Peggy were instrumental in the construction of the church and Peter was a longtime member of the church council. Pete was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in the China, Burma and the India Theaters. He retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in 1979 as a steam plant engineer. Pete enjoyed automobiles and could often be found tinkering on them, cleaning them or repairing them. He could repair almost anything and would find a way to solve almost any mechanical problem. He is survived by his wife, Magdaline Peggy Labosh Honchalk, whom he married March 25, 1944, and would have celebrated 67 years of marriage this month, two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter Honchalk III and wife, Angie, of Pearl City, Ill., Dave and Suzanne Honchalk, of Monrovia, Md., three grandchildren, Delany Honchalk, Samuel Honchalk and Matthew Honchalk, who always brought a smile to his face, a brother and sister-in-law, Martin and Margaret Honchalk, of O'Brien, Fla., and a sister, Jennie Hostetler, of Fayette City. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Koshka, Rose Gimbara and Annie Lucas. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 8, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the LEONARD J. PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, (724) 929-6183. Relatives and friends will gather Wednesday, March 9, at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, Mary Street, for 9 a.m. funeral services with the Very Rev. Samuel Smolcic as celebrant. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The Belle Vernon American Legion will conduct services Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Parastas services at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
