Peter Coates; 86; of Charleroi; formerly of Brownstown; Fayette City; died Wednesday; Jan. 5; 2005; at 8:45 a.m.; at Adult Assisted Living Inc.; Dunlevy. Born Feb. 28; 1918; in Webster; he was a son of the late George and Catherine Coates. A lifelong resident of Brownstown; Fayette City; Mr. Coates was a member of Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church; Fayette City; and retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel; Allenport Plant; where he worked as a millwright. He was a World War II veteran; where he served in the U.S. Navy; and was a member of the Fairhope VFW. Mr. Coates was also a self-taught musician who played throughout the valley for half a century with several different ethnic groups. He later formed a band called the Three Vets and later formed a Polish polka band; The Harmoneers; who recorded several albums. His son; Jack Coates Sr.; said If every bride who danced the wedding dance to his bass; they would be lined from Uniontown to McKeesport. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law; John Jack Sr. and Lynne Coates; of Charleroi; a daughter and son-in-law; Catherine S. and Jack W. Marshall; of Columbia; S.C.; formerly of Fayette City; three sisters; Helen Yetsconish and Blanche Coates; both of Fayette City; and Mary Kaufman; of McKeesport; four grandchildren; John A. Coates Jr.; Aimee Beth Brougher; Joseph Peter Coates and Jack C. Marshall; and four great-grandchildren; Stephanie Brougher; Breanna Coates; Victoria Marshall and Benjamin Coates. He was preceded in death by his wife; Charlotte Dean-Ashton Coates; in 1998; six brothers; Michael; Stanley; Frank; Joseph; Thomas and Charles Coates; and two sisters; Pauline Kartz and Rose Homanics. Visitation will be held Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the LEONARD J. PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME; Family Owned and Operated; 626 Broad Ave.; Belle Vernon; 724-929-6183. Prayer service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home; followed by funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Leonard J. McAlpin as celebrant. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Parish wake service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the funeral home.
