Obituary

Peter Bud Roman, 94, of Monessen, died Saturday, June 15, 2013, at his home. He was born in Gallatin on July 7, 1918, the son of the late John Roman and Mary Baka Roman. Bud grew up in Gallatin and was a graduate of Monongahela High School. Following graduation, he played minor league baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates farm team in San Bernardino, Calif. He was a veteran of World War II, having serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Bud owned and operated the Monessen Sports Shop for over 30 years, and went on to work for Guttman Oil as a salesman. He was a member of St. John the Divine Russian Orthodox Church in Monessen. Bud was a past president and Melvin Jones Fellow of the Monessen Lions Club, and was the last living charter member of the club. He was also a member of Monessen Elks 773 and Thomas McKee Post 28 American Legion. Bud was inducted into the Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame and a member of their selection committee. Bud was a baseball, soccer and football referee with the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA), Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), and Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL). He was a die-hard Pittsburgh sports fan, having loved the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins. He is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, LaVonne and James McFarland of Houston, Texas, Sandra and Ronald Caporossi of Willoughby Hills, Ohio, and Deborah and David Martin of Centreville, Va., six grandchildren, Mary (Glen) Matthews, Amy McFarland, Katie Caporossi, Lindsay, Danielle, and Brett Martin, a sister, Margaret Roman of Dover, Del., a sister-in-law, Gilda Figler of Monessen, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Figler Roman, three brothers, and three sisters. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013, in the DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC. AND CREMATION SERVICES, 441 Reed Ave., Monessen. Additional viewing will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2013, followed by the funeral service in St. John the Divine Russian Orthodox Church, 42 McKee Ave., Monessen, with Rev. Dragan Filipovic officiating. Entombment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery Mausoleum. The following services will be held Thursday in the funeral home: Parastas service at 7 p.m., American Legion Post 22 at 7:30 p.m., and Monessen Lions Club at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, in order to honor Bud's love of youth sports, the family has established the Peter B. Roman Memorial Fund which will be used to help local athletes.
