Obituary

Peter A. Sopko Jr., 50, of Marine St., Belle Vernon (Washington Township), died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at 2:45 p.m. in Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born April 27, 1951, in North Charleroi, he was the son of Peter A. Sr. and Agnes DiGregorio Sopko of Fayette City. Mr. Sopko was a resident of Washington Township for the past eight months, having previously resided in Amity. He was a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church and was a sales manager for General Cable of Kentucky. He had been previously employed by Bethlehem Mines. Mr. Sopko was a graduate of Belle Vernon Area High School with the Class of 1969, Penn State University with the Class of 1973, and was an active member of the community, currently serving on the Washington Township Zoning Board. He also was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Redstone Watershed. He is survived by his wife, Kate MacDonald Sopko, to whom he was married 23 years, loving father of Patrick, Megan and Brennan Sopko, all at home, one brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Milana Sopko of Washington, Pa., one sister and brother-in-law, Anna Jean and Dennis Stuchal of Masontown, eight nieces, and one great niece and great nephew. Visitation will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the LEONARD J. PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon. A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, following by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. John R. Cindric, V.F., pastor of St. Sebastian R.C. Church, and the Rev. Greg Premoshis, president of Geibel Catholic High School in Connellsville, as co-celebrants. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed Monday at 3 p.m. in the funeral home by members of St. Sebastian Parish. The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Peter A. Sopko Jr. to St. Vincent DePaul Society.
